Friday before thanksgiving i was driving home from work, there's a nasty bend in the road that is also a crest of a hill. Just as I crested the the hill i met an oncoming car in my lane. They were attempting a pass on a double yellow...

I cranked the wheel and missed the on coming car by inches, but doing so i caught the soft should and lost the car. Passenger side impacted into the wire guard rail, almost rolled but somehow got i got lucky and didnt sustain any major injuries.

Damage was extensive even though the pics seem tame, over 20k in parts plus frame damage. Lost all coolant and engine oil, also lost all power after impact

Not sure what im going to replace it with, i do love this platform but i feel like mixing it up, awd is a must so maybe s5 or s3 not sure yet.

    Friday before thanksgiving

Glad you are OK, if you are anything like me you will not be happy with an S3 after driving the S4.

B8.5 S4/S5 or make the jump to an S6.

Nope, the driver he passed stopped to help me. I'll be investing in a dash cam for the new car.

Power delivery sucks compared to the S4. Have to keep it over 3k to really draw the power out.

The quattro system it uses also sucks, push it hard and it is pretty much FWD.

The interior to me just felt cheaper than the S4.

S6 was too big for me(and also out of budget), Try driving a B8.5 S4. Same car but upgraded tech package is a nice refresher.

If still nothing time to start looking outside the Audi club.

Sorry for your trouble. I'm dealing with a rear end hit right now and its escalating into a bigger deal than I thought. Proper repairs to this car costs a small fortune.

So sad to see another S4 is rough shape like that. Glad you're OK. If you liked the B8 then you would like the B8.5! I did, anyway...

I am worried about the halex, nothing like what our s4 have. Im starting to look outside of audi, but awd seems to be a real limitation for me

Shi.. glad you're ok hope that guy helped be a witness for insurance.

B8.5 S4/S5 is def the way to go (RS5?) My buddy switched from an RS5 to C450amg and misses the sc. Maybe look into the Jag XE? SC, Aluminum body.

Hmm you might be confusing the RS5 to an S5? Rs5 comes V8 N/A while S5's have supercharged V6's

WOW! To hell with the car, good thing YOU weren't totalled! As others said, if that were a completely square head on, it might not have ended well for either vehicle's drivers plus perhaps others. If it were me I'd prolly need a pair of pants too.

Good luck on the new car front but again, glad you're okay.

DAMN. That sucks. Glad you're ok.

How are the car insurance rules up north? Are you going to get penalized for something that wasn't your fault? In the US, I believe that most car insurance companies will call you at fault for swerving off the road. They actually want you to hit the oncoming vehicle/animal/object in the road. Even though doing so could potentially put you (and the other driver) at a greater risk of harm. Crazy.

Ugh - that sucks for the car. Sad to see a great machine bite the dust. But it is replaceable. Have you thought of perhaps a lightly used P-Car? If I had to replace mine I'd probably go with a Cayman GTS - yeah not as practical and yeah it would suck in the snow but there's not really anything else out there I'd really want right now.

When my car was stolen and i was preparing to replace it, i looked at the MK7 GTi, Golf R, STi, 335i xdrive, CTS V Sport, Q5 3.0T and SQ5. At the end of the day i was looking to replace it with another S4.

If my budget had another 10 to 15k though, the S6 is an amazing machine. My wife has an S3 and i can never find a comfortable seating position (I'm 6'1 280lbs). I always feel like my head is too close to the ceiling. Stock S4 versus stock S3, the S3 feels alot more fun in the turns but the 3.0T feels better suited for daily driving in traffic, etc.

Good luck OP and I'm glad that you came out of that accident without major injuries. Another testament of how solid and safe these cars are.

Good to see that you're okay, cars can be replaced. As with what jsh139 said, is insurance giving you any hassle? Glad that the guy that was being passed stopped to help you, hopefully he's offered his information as a witness. Dash cam is a must these days IMO.

I was coming back home from Algonquin on the Sunday during the Canadian Thanksgiving. This idiot in a Honda Civic kept on doing dangerous passing at night, passing more cars up hills and around corners. The stupid thing is that he had to stop on the side of the road in the next town to figure out where he was going so everybody he passed, he passed us all irresponsibility again. If I could only read his plate and remember it, I would have called OPP as I knew there was a detachment in the town ahead that he stopped at.

Glad you are ok OP, sucks to be spending the long weekend mourning the loss of your loved one. Most important you at least were to spend it from what it sounds like, not in a hospital bed.

TBH, I don't think it is that way here, as I can't go into large details because my case is still open with the lawyers till December.

More or less the jest of it is I was making a left turn on my motorbike and didn't see the other person cutting out of a business driveway through 3 lanes of traffic, I was going cautious though. Reaction was brake hard, didn't hit the car (missed by about 1-2 feet) that was in my lane, but dropped the bike and used my wrist to brace the fall (instead of my head / neck). They were charged by the police and as angry as I was on adrenaline at the time with the cop I did not. As for insurance, I didn't notice any change on my insurance, and nothing about at fault since she was charged. This all happened 2 years ago.

The fact OP made a judgement call due to someone passing illegally (which can add no doubt a bunch more charges against them including no doubt speeding and dangerous driving), I can't imagine anything will be at fault.

All of this. An ex of mine had an S3 and I've had one as a loaner while my S4 was at the dealership for service, and they're all true. I drove my ex's in the winter (Cleveland winter), and the AWD system is terrible compared to the S4. The tires were spinning all over in my street, and the car had a hard time getting up my driveway. My car doesn't even notice the snow is there. The car just always felt like a cheap economy car that they tried putting a more premium interior into: It's like the Ford Focus Titanium...literally, almost the same quality level of interior parts.

That said, the audio system on the A3/S3 blows the 4/5 series out of the water. I'm literally driving an A3 loaner today while my car is at the dealership, and I forgot how much punch the system has.

You are very lucky. My sister was in that same situation, except she didn't not miss the oncoming car. She had to be cut out of her Passat and was airlifted to hospital and spent quite a bit of time there, and is still dealing with a lot of issues a couple years later. As others have said the car can be replaced, but you cannot. Good luck on finding a replacement ride and make sure insurance gives you a decent value for yours.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone, as for insurance I am 100% at fault. Any single vehicle incident is considered at fault here. Thankfully I have a driver protection plan, this allows 1 at fault per 7 years. Basically my premiums are guaranteed not climb. I was told if I had a dash cam and it proved what happened i wouldn't be at fault.

But the one thing have learned is to have better rental coverage. I was set to 1000$ for rental coverage under my policy and not its all dried up. I'm getting the rental at a lower rate but I'm going to be out of pocket now.

S6 market is almost non existent here, only 3 listed online for the whole province. Also it would be a bit of a financial stretch for me and I was planning on buying a new bass boat next summer

It sucks that happened, BUT the S4 saved you. If you were in an SUV, you may not be writing on this forum because you would've had a head-on. I believe in avoiding and feel you should replace the car with another S4. Don't subject yourself to not being able to avoid situations especially these days with people so aggressive and selfishly texting. No time to skimp if you have the funds to really protect yourself. Glad you are okay. Well done S4.

I would have thought if a witness can confirm what happened with a car doing an unsafe pass and you had to take evasive action to avoid a head on collision, you would not be 100% at fault? Heck, it seems that having a full head-on-collision-and-pray-that-you-live would make the other driver 100% responsible.
