Its a nice thought, but i think its riddled with potential problems:
1. Who is in charge of who does what work?
2. Does someone who rebuilds a motor and add turbos receive the same percentage chance of owning it as someone who donates a taillight?
2b. who makes these decisions?
3. Who is covering transportation?
4. Who is insuring this thing as it keeps changing hands, seems like a liability problem
5. Who holds the title on it, what keeps them from just saying "thanks, its mine" at the end? Not to mention the liability issue of above
6. Who is making the initial purchase?
7. How do we keep a cohesive build plan? Person A wants part x person B wants part y
8. Half the people lately seem to not have enough parts, knowledge, or time to keep their own B5's running let alone a community one
There are charitable people in this community, as well as knowledgeable. However, I hate to be a pessimist, but even still, I dont give this idea a snowball's chance of working or reaching completion. I would love to be proven wrong though.
Perhaps there is a smaller scale project that should be tested first. One with less risk or initial investment. I know Flyboy was trying to get a tuning tutorial put together using community contributions for example.
At the end of the day, it already feels like most cars on this forum are Community Built. From sharing information, trading or selling parts at fair prices, or just lending a physical hand between members. One specific community car would be a nice symbol of that, but in reality we already have a lot of them. There are countless members I have met in this community without whom I would not be able to keep my B5 or my friends VAG cars running as easily.
