Never expected an air freshener to do this.

I picked up one of those Little Tree air fresheners the other day. I thought it might look tacky hanging it from my mirror, so I hung it from the shifter instead. After a couple hours it started to bubble the vinyl around the shifter housing. What the heck? This harmless looking tree carries a dark secret apparently. Afterward, I checked the packaging and it says "Hang freely. Avoid contact with any surface." I never thought to read directions on how to use a little tree air freshener but perhaps I should have! Just a heads up!

Yaaa they actually have warnings on the package about that happening, they contain chemicals which aid in evaporation, think acetone, alcohol, ethanol etc obviously they don't use flammable things (well maybe they do) but the Chems they do use have a similar affect as to what those chemicals would do to your interior

I don't believe any information sheet that has an "exemption" from listing what's innit

Never expected an air freshener to do this.

It does say in the seventh section, hang freely keep off surfaces.. which it also says in yellow on the package if I'm not mistaken, I remember reading it as it did the same thing in an older beater pickup I had

Obviously I didn't mind in that thing though, maybe you could pop the bubbles with a needle and try just pushing them flat

Yes, I saw the warning on the package after I noticed the bubbles. I just never thought to read the instructions on a little tree air freshener before. What could possibly go wrong with a cardboard tree on a string? Haha. The bubbles squish down when I press on them but then they come back up. If I can get my hands on a small syringe, I might fill it with glue and inject the bubbles and hold them flat. No biggie either way but I was surprised to see this happen.

Haha I think I read the packaging cause I saw a big yellow warning bar and it was kind of a "wtf" moment trying to think of why an air freshener would have a warning on it

Yes but I don't believe those things are actually in them.. because they are flammable.. lol

They use chemicals similar to them though because of the evaporation and solvent properties, same way the perfume works and that's why they often times have alcohol in them

I have one there now, with the wrapper mostly still on it as you are supposed to slowly expose the tree a week at a time. I bet if you do it that way instead of ripping off the wrapper all at once then it would have time for the harsh chemicals to evaporate away... Either way, I'm switching to the clothes hanger location myself now too.
