    Drivetrain noise

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Good morning guys and gals. I was recently driving my car and noticed that I can hear the clutch engaging when I'm driving. It doesn't slip or have any other issues. Does anyone else experience this issue?

    You really gave us no info? I'm going to assume it's an automatic though

    If it's above say 40 or while on the highway this is normal as it is he torque converter locking (as long as it's not constantly locking and unlocking as that's really bad and means it's failing or has or the clutch packs are failing or has) when's the last time you checked fluid level or changed the fluid? If it's above 50k then you should change it and the filter

    Also check your snub mount, it could be worn causing the drivetrain to have slop and make the slight locking much more abrupt, especially if you get a loud downshift while coming to a stop

    So what do you mean you can hear it engaging while driving, do you mean like over a certain speed like it's slipping or as in while your applying it you can hear it lick/clunk? More info needed still

    When shifting gears, I can hear the clutch engage as I left off of the clutch pedal.

    At what point do you hear the sound? As in at what point of travel, right at the beginning right off he floor right before you come all the way off? Mine makes it right as I begin applying because of the tiny amount inherent in any drivetrain as it "tenses up" it will make a slight knocking noise, if his sounds like yours I wouldn't worry about it

    You can also get under the car and rotate the rear axle back and forth slightly and you'll see the slop I am referring it and the exact noise I am deacribing

    I hear it right as i'm changing gears. As soon as the I start letting go of the clutch pedal. it can be from 1st to 2nd or 5th to 6th. It sounds as if the clutch is grabbing the FW. it's not loud or making a banging noise. only making a noise as if it is grabbing the FW.

    Edit: This is something that is difficult for me to articulate...

    I'm sorry I don't know what you mean by FW

    Does the front track have a snub mount? It might be toasted, but I would look into your transmission mount engine mounts etc, I don't know enough about the front track to really suggest more than that (also didn't notice that in the first post so obviously you don't have a drive shaft lol)

    Like a grinding or scratching noise? Maybe your disc is worn to the point the rivets are grinding on the flywheel?

    FW= Flywheel.

    I had the snub mount changed a year ago. it's definitely not that as I remember the noise and slop when shifting when that thing was disintegrated into nothing.

    The clutch thankfully isn't yet. I have taken it on the road and it grabs just fine. I think it may be worn to the point of it making this noise like you're suggesting. Is there a DIY on clutch removal and installation?
