    115K+ miles on my Stage I B8.5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I bought my 2013 A4 new back in late summer of 2012. Prior to the 15K mile service I had the Stasis Stage I installed at my dealer. I do all the maintenance myself and the car has over 115K miles. The car runs solid and the fit and finish is still excellent with no squeaks or rattles. I've been thoroughly impressed with this car, and it's my first German car. I've heard the horror stories of high maintenance and repairs on German cars, but if you do the work yourself, it's not that bad. I'm surprised I haven't had any major issues with a tuned vehicle with this many miles.
So, how many miles do you guys think this car will last? I'm thinking 200K no problem....300K? I'd like to see 300K but Audi wants to take my money for a new RS3 or B9 S4.

There's a few threads on the timing chain that you might want to replace for good measure and the main seals. Lots of threads that answer this.

I've been looking at the B9 S4 too but I can't get over that dash and the cup holders that don't allow you to hold a shaker cup or anything of size. Sounds like the turbo will give it a little more kick and room for more power though. Have you looked at the S6? That thing just keep catching my attention more than any other model.

I am at 118k with APR stage I. Car is tight and runs strong. I had my trusted Audi mechanic swap my tensioner and inspect my timing gear. He said still plenty of life left on the chain and guides. This car has spent most of it's life on the highway.

I Just purchased a 2010 2.0t 6MT with 115k Miles and it has had most major items addressed like the Tensioners / PCV and Oil Consumption issue. I am facing the common 'wastegate chatter' but everything still seems to be pulling great with no CEL so I'll cross that bridge at a later date. I'm hoping to get at least another 50k out of it (I drive about 6-7k miles a yr) I've ordered some stuff to bring it up to snuff.

    aFe dry drop in filter
    Cabin Filter
    Updated 'Piston sytle' DV
    NGK PFR7S8EG Spark Plugs
    OEM R8 Coilpaks

Is there anything else you guys would recommend I add to this list? Obviously a carbon clean in the near future as well.

You bought it with that amount of miles? Hope you got a good deal. Also, the 2010 has the updated DV already...

I got a great deal on it and it's in excellent shape in and out! The exterior just needs a good recon being black and the interior is almost perfect. Oh well on the DV, I always replace them as part of general maintenance when I buy any turbocharged Audi/VW. I'm sure it'll be fine when I pull it out if it is indeed the updated version.

I bought one when I bought mine new years ago thinking it didn't have the updated DV only to find out it has been. I think most have

Bahaha, well there goes $50 bucks! Oh well, maybe the old one will be 'tired' and need a replacing. I'm getting a slight hesitation when I ease into the gas/boost in low RPMS. I'm hoping that replacing these items will resolve if not help the issue. Though, the turbo will need to be replaced at some point due to the wastegate being loose, hoping to wait until after winter. My cousin is an Audi tech at the only dealership in Maine so that is a plus. He knows these motors pretty thoroughly.

Here's a few quick photos (not that you guys don't know what a bone stock Premium looks like)

The grille will need to be replaced as it has cracked but no biggie because now I'll be able to throw on something a bit more appealing

Also, my Micro-Can VCDS cable that works on my 2014 Jetta SE doesn't work with the Audi. So it looks like I'll need to upgrade to a Hex+CAN...

Good to know there are a4s out there that had stage 1 performed and lasted this long!

It will last for as long as you want to keep throwing money at it.

I recently purchased a 2011 a4 w/198k and I just fixed the sloppy wastegate actuator and flashed it with stage 2. The car is quiet and drives nice. Only problems I've seen was needing to re-solder the center brake light and the rear coil springs are broken.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll need to look into these preventive maintenance items.
I've briefly looked at the S6's. If I was going back down to a single car, it may be higher on my list. I'm having too much fun with the GT350 to go back down to 1 car though. I like the cache of an Audi RS model, but I think I may be more comfortable in a bigger B9 S4. Only test drives will know for sure!

    .

I'm getting hesitation between 2500-3500 rpm myself. 2012 A4 6mt. Very interested to see how this goes for you.

I'll definitely let you know, it seems the hesitation or 'flutter' happens when i step into the gas at that RPM range so I'm sure what you're experiencing is similar to my issue. Unfortunately, a boost gauge would really help me diagnose this issue but I do not have one yet.

Coils and plugs seem to be scheduled for delivery tomorrow so I may get to it after work since it's going to be the last nice day until the weekend up here.

Alright so new NGK plugs and OEM R8 coils came in today and I'm happy to report this helped out TREMENDOUSLY! Throttle response is more crisp and smooth, the power band/ power delivery is much more refined, idle is great (though idle was alright before) honestly I noticed the difference right when I went to leave the driveway. Is 700 RPMs a typical idle for this car when it's fully warmed up?

That said, I still have a bit of a flutter -sometimes during certain conditions- but it seems a whole lot less noticeable now. I'm hoping between changing the air filter, replacing DV , and eventually doing the wastegate fix and/or replacing the turbo the issue will disappear completely. I recommend new plugs and red top coils to anyone who thinks they may need a change because it just changed my whole driving experience, of course YMMV but it's just what I observed.
    Pics below!

How do the old plugs look to you guys?

They look like they needed replaced. I've been religious about changing my plugs based on the maintenance schedule (every 35K miles I believe) and have never had a stuttering issue. Although I still use the original coils. Maybe next time I'll replace them.

They definitely needed to be replaced, but they weren't terrible. I can see some carbon build up on the electrode which will affect spark, power and fuel economy. What did you replace them with?

I replaced them with NGK PFR7S8EG plugs, definitely a hell of a lot better now than with the former plugs.
