Ebony Black Pearl C5 05 allroad

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Having just returned from Avantoberfest, I figured it was time to open a thread on my 05 allroad....

First a bit of history, having had an 04 B6 Avant from 2006 to 2011 and then ( now ) a B6 S4 sedan, I have too many times lamented the practicality of an avant and so searching for an avant was the mission from 2014 on. Although I knew about the allroad I never really considered them as a realistic option. Have to admit I have had a 2003 Audi allroad brochure tucked away, so somewhere in those cobwebbed recesses of grey matter ... Want !!!

A serious search began last December 2015, but finding a well loved allroad which hadn't been run thru the abuse and neglect was proving much harder than I initially assumed. Then again most allroad owners do not want to sell so what is left is the ones bought by people who should never have bought an Audi, let alone an allroad.
The real 1st possibility was an 01 but as I tried to get a friend / coworker to set up an appt with the owner ( Little old Lady not quite sedate ) the list of red flags kept growing. Sitting for a year, possible bad brakes, tranny etc ... It was a fail and not an option, I have a B6 S4 thank you very much so another high maintenance repair right from the get go was not realistic...

This May ( 2016 ) a friend mentioned that she had a friend that was considering selling her allroad. Having recently purchased a Porsche Macan ( ). Hmmm..!!
So I asked my friend what it was and she didn't know, just that it was a plain allroad in a dark color...

So I called this connection and set up to go look at it....
This as it was the day I first went to look @ this 2005 allroad.

IMG_0394 - Version 2 by marc streiff, on Flickr

Well upon arrival it was obvious this was not just any old 2005 allroad. 1st ... It was Ebony Black Pearl Effect color and in full body paint. 17" double spoke wheels, full privacy tinted windows, premium package, cold weather package, interior privacy shades, heated rear seats but no Navigation option. The exterior clear wrap on fenders and hood front, mirrors etc ... The interior condition ?? Immaculate, all peeling switches were always replaced as needed, It had in the last year had new brakes, turbos overhauled and bags .... Basically it needed nothing but a new home.
She had bought it brand new, always garaged and serviced like clockwork. Having seen her " Seven" MTB's and other various two wheel stuff, this seller was almost OCD on keeping sports equipment and cars in pristine condition.... ( PO is also a gear head Yay !! )

There was a caveat, she was not 100% sure she wanted to sell... And the buyer had to love Audi's and be able to care / wrench it themselves or keep up the service schedule no exceptions... ( I found out later she had 2-3 other interested parties willing to pay twice what I did, They however didn't meet the criteria. Im thankful )
So It took about 3-4 days for her to decide 100% ...
So after the followup test ride she offered if I wanted to also drive the Macan ... Oh No ... I just couldn't but did, such torture...

Anyway long story short I was back in an avant.... An allroad with a 2.7T and yes its a Tip...

    @ it's new home.

After having owned this allroad for 4 months, it had 98,000+ miles when I bought it and it now has 107,000+ miles. I did buy it as (1) a daily driver and (2) a lot of my work required quite a bit of commuting back and forth.... That being said Avantoberfest added another 1,004 miles over 4 days from Friday to Monday....

I have had a couple issues. A coolant sensor went ( the green one below the MAF rear of motor) I blew an airschock and needed to replace the drivers side drive shaft as both boots were torn.. Will update and post on each repair and what I found and could be helpful as a DIY to others ...

One cool thing, I only need One Bentley repair manual as it covers the C5's 2.7T and the 4.2 V8 which is almost identical to the B6 S4 4.2 ...
That is from Bentley Publishers 1734 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge Ma and the Audi A6 ( C5 ) 1998-2004 service manual ISBN # is 978-0-8376-1670-4

So other than that Its a great car, very different than the B6 S4 but quite similar since they are only 2 years apart..

I do have a want list of items but I think over the winter planning out the upgrade list will be the mission.
On the list already is (1) Because Bags answer to the allroad bags / shocks in wanting to keep the oem adjustable suspension but also wanting a more sportier feel and adjustment
    (2) Something by TSW but as they are back ordered it probably won't be until December ...

Motor wise I don't know enough about the 2.7T so a bit of research in the B5 segment seems a good start.
As for exhaust, I will fabricate in the same manner as I did for the S4 ( need to update that thread. ). Undecided for now as to how far I will go in completely deleting the cats or just the precats.
Much to think about and long work day but hope I can develop this thread with much that will be useful to others...

All said and done, no CEL's, no leaks, it doesn't burn oil to which I can attest that over 9,000 miles I needed to add 1 quart total which makes one very happy and tells me this motor has a long life ...

Just to illustrate how dark the window tint is in the rear sections of the allroad.

So on to my 1st hiccup.

CEL came on intermittently for a week or so. In hindsight it was the coolant sensor ( green under the MAF rear of motor ) slowly expiring. Had it diagnosed but the cost of replacement was absurd. I was quoted $170.00 for replacement. Its a $20 part and a simple DIY to replace.... 15-20 minutes labor at most

Here are both the old on the left and the replacement green one to the right.
The set of needle hook pointy tools (lol) are necessary to remove the black O ring... You don't want to drop it, either the old but especially the new one into the engine bay, behind the motor. Since this is not a lower motor pan removal ( unless you drop the O ring or and the sensor ) it is a fairly simple DIY. No more than 30 minutes.

Untitled by marc streiff, on Flickr

Need to remove the top covers around the motor, they are not only in the way but are fairly fragile and easy to crack if you happen to stupidly lean on one...
( Ask me How I know ) I plan to eventually replace all with carbon but still..

Untitled by marc streiff, on Flickr

First, removing this MAF hose... Easy except for those two friggen clips ... Really Audi ?? I needed to use large adjustable plyers, the amount of spring strength is definitely overkill.
Theres probably a special tool just for this but not searching or willing to spend a lot of money on that.

Untitled by marc streiff, on Flickr

Everything removed now access to the sensor is possible.

Untitled by marc streiff, on Flickr

At the same time since the air box and filter is removed, it was also a good time to replace..

Untitled by marc streiff, on Flickr

This was the best pic I could shoot of this sensor location, it is held in place with a spring clip ( its to the right of the new sensor in the 1st pic ) A flat head small screwdriver is the only tool needed to remove both the spring clip and to unlock the clip on the sensor connection and then to pull it out.

Untitled by marc streiff, on Flickr

Just reverse the removal to reinstall everything and that should be it. The CEL will show up upon first starting up but in my case and it should be the same for everyone ( bearing in mind there is nothing else that triggers a CEL ) it reset and disappeared after a few minutes of driving and a stop and Go restart.

Next is the 2nd Hiccup which actually ended up being a replacement of both the driver side airshock and the drive shaft... Stay tuned need to collect pics...

Collapsed front suspension resulting from ruptured driver side airshock...

It is October 10th & could not make the yearly long roof event or Avantoberfest. But this allroad is undergoing some changes this month. BBK 18Z Brembo, downpipes & some normal routine miantenance. Will post new photos soon.

The allroad had undergone cosmetic changes in the last 2 years & pictured here with (1) the refinished 2 piece oem wheels & 402 modded down 17mm but doing its duty @ the lumber yard for rehabbing my deck. In addition to 25mm H&R bolt on spacers.

LJ7kFOQ5ToqTkr0ZP85hwQ by marc streiff, on Flickr

& with temporarily borrowing its cousins B6 S4 avus 18x8 refinished wheels. In the works to be refinished over the winter is. set of Mercedes AMG Monobloc 18x8.5 fronts 18x9.5 rears.

IMG_2852 by marc streiff, on Flickr

Cosmetically I've wrapped the door blades & window trim in 5D carbon fiber high gloss wrap. The hood is also done. Over the winter I will honeycomb the front grilles hood & lower grilles, I sourced out A8 exterior mirrors which I will skin over the covers with carbon fiber weave. Much to do for next spring including sourcing out a complete interior makeover, looking for B6/B7 S4 avant front & rear seats & same generation B6/B7 or C5 flat bottom 3 spoke paddle tip control steering wheel.

So an update to the current look of the C5. In this pic, these are the 2nd set of Gallardo Cassiopeia wheels. With the 1st set ( which I traded my 4 cats for ) I was running 30 profile tires & our New England roads re often not in the best of shape, thus cracked the inside of the wheels barrels.

Evidently, I have not updated this thread as often as I'd thought... My Bad. The preceding post is this year's Long Roof Rally, much fun but the C5 did hve its mechanical hiccups. The front bags were not inflating correctly so I ordered new Gen II front airbags. After some Vag-com, replacing the solenoid & the under dash relay, I pulled the compressor & separating the piston & cylinder, the piston itself hs been very busy self destructing for some time. Which now explains the decreasing performance of the system to fill up the bags. New compressor ordered & being shipped... So moving on there's been some cosmetic & mechanical changes in the past year or so. The XS-Power DP's were installed flowing into 2.5" stainless steel tubes exiting into 6" flow thru circular mufflers... Quite happy with the tone / result. Upside was to sell the removed pre & main cats which were traded for a set of Lamborghini Gallardo Cassiopeia wheels with fairly new Federal Evolution tires.. Win for the day... Carbon Fiber engine covers & exterior mirrors installed... Going to write up details in posts describing the changes & fun....

Wheels... Running the Lambo wheels, I'm currently on the 2nd set since Ive basically destroyed the 1st set.. To recap. Tire size being 245/35 fronts & 285/30 rears. So the rears profile is too low, for the allroad 35 profile is the lowest for our wonderful New England roads. Now I needed to run 50mm bolt on spacers by H&R for the rears to clear the Bags by 5mm.. Huge backspace measurement for these 19x11 wheels.

AC697E5B-2D78-46F6-9CA0-3D92F6B31358 by marc streiff, on Flickr

Quite different from the previous set, I didn't think I would like chrome polished wheels but it works... I like the contrast between the polished roof rails & wheels but I think I will leave the window trim wrapped in carbon fiber trim...

On to the Carbon fiber bits. I've wanted to fit Carbon fiber exterior mirror housings to my Audis but the cost of these online I felt were ridiculously overpriced.. So the only option being to fabricate my own. For the C5 I pulled a set from a 2003 A8. The housing is smaller, rounder & sportier looking than the allroad housing. I intended to use the entire units but since the A8 is a sedan, sloppier roof/widow line ( the triangular mounting bracket to the doors ) would not fit. Luckily the hardware inside the housing is exactly the same as my C5 so I only needed to swap the mechanism, the housing fit exactly onto the C5 bracket.

The process is relatively simple. I bought CF weave & clear sow curing resin from Jamestown Distributors. Used spray on contact cement to adhere the weave onto the housing. (1) is to sand the housing with 220 grit (2) clean thoroughly with soap & water degreaser, (3) cut CF weave to size (4) spray adhesive onto housing then gently apply the weave onto the housing. (5) Do not stretch the weave since the pattern will be deformed, just apply it softly onto the housing surface.

This next pic is after the 1st coat of resin being applied. It took 4-5 applications, sanding with 400 between 2nd - 4th coat then I ended with 2000 to 4000 grit to get the housing ready for polish with compound then wax.. CCCD95CB-DD3A-4785-A3F2-81D9B0817A94 by marc streiff, on Flickr
