The problem wasn't with the coils

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi all, you may remember I posted a thread a couple days ago stating that one of my coil packs had gone bad.
Well we got the coil in today and swapped it out and the problem (misfire on cylinder 2) has persisted. We then replaced the spark plugs and found a decent carbon buildup on all of them, with fuel still on the 2nd cylinder plug. The mechanic also mentioned something about low fuel pressure(?).

The mechanic has started to look at injectors now and I'm getting really worried. If anyone has any input on what I should be looking for or should try next I would really appreciate it. The car is only 3 years old!!
    TIA.

    2013 P+ A4 B8.5.

Just in regards to the coil pack, I didn't see your other thread so I'm not sure what advice you received, but it would have been a lot easier/cheaper to rule that out by simply swapping the #2 coil with another cylinder to see if the misfire switched with it, if not then it's not the coil. I would think the mechanic would have attempted that prior to trouble shooting by throwing parts at it.

As far as the plugs, it may simply be a fouled plug on cylinder 2 (carbon build up), which would be why it's wet. Have the plugs ever been changed, not sure on your mileage? Do they have another reason for suspecting low fuel pressure? I'd start with new plugs and see what happens before footing the bill for anything else.

**Thanks to the post below I just read your other thread, seems you had a lot of people telling you what was wrong but no suggestions on how to actually diagnose what was wrong or a differential diagnosis. Too bad, could have saved yourself $450. As one person so accurately put it " "Diagnostics" for an ignition coil is such a load of shit its incredible", and turns out their diagnostic was incorrect.

Yep...I make it a habit of running Injector Cleaner every 16000Km (10000Miles).
I just had the Stage 2 Oil Consumption fix performed on my car @ 135000Km (~84000miles) and my service adviser said the tech looked at my injectors and commented on how clean they were.
Never had these "injector" issues on my A4.

Were they able to un-stick the injector for you?

Thanks guys, I apologise for not updating the original thread. I'm not used to forum etiquette. So is it best to ask him to look at the injector next? I will ask for all the codes that have bee triggered and post them here, maybe it will line up with someone else's experience. Do you guys think I should get a compression test done too?

The problem wasn't with the coils

Spoke to the APR dealer this morning and he suggested I take it into him to have a look and remove the tune tans retest. So after this compression test comes back I'll probably get it taken there.

Update: 0 compression in cylinder 2. Starting to get pretty worried now, so having it towed to the dealership to have a look. Warranty has just expired so I'm pretty paused I didn't get an extended warranty now.

I had similar issue and ended up being an injector seal. Compression test netted 0 PSI on one of the cylinders. Due to these engines being direct injected, if the seals fail, the cylinder will loose compression. You should be able to log this and eventually the ECU will deactivate that cylinder to protect itself. Fingers crossed for you.

    Luckily, I'm still under warranty.

What brand of fuel injector cleaner do you use?

Hi again everyone. Little update for you all. Have just heard back from the dealership, there is engine damage to the long block and bore damage. They suspect it was caused by a broken piston ring. I'm absolutely devastated to say the least. They have quoted me $21k repair plus labor. Thanks again for all your help.

I would go back and say the reason the piston ring broke was because the faulty fuel injector was spraying fuel all the time thus the piston was attempting to compress a liquid and therefore failed. At least try to get a goodwill repair, if not, throw that engine out and get a used one installed, it'll be way cheaper than $21K.

Ring failure and you have a facelift model?

For fuck's sake, the ever increasing instances of all these engine failures is starting to have me concerned for long term viability.

I was going to start modding, but it seems like issues are becoming more common, I'm hesitant to do so.

Not on this planet should you pay $21K to the dealer. I had my engine replaced and it was about $5K USD including long block and labor. Check a local indy shop

A complete new engine costs around $15k. How could it cost that much even without the labor included?

I've had my engine replaced FOC worth $15k including labor. For a 2013 45k miles car you should definitely try for a goodwill repair.
