Because our cars are older you're going to have a hard time finding retrofit roof racks. They kind of don't make them. Maybe it's some obscure brand which I wouldn't trust. The best rack you can install on your car will be the Yakima Q bars. They're very heavy duty and will last forever. As a matter of fact they come with a lifetime warranty. Your other option is Thule, our cars come with an indentation for a detent which protrudes out of the clip on their system. If you open your door and look on the top of the door where it seems against the roof line you will see holes I'm talking about. The problem with a Thule is that it may only be installed in that location of those indentations for the detens to be installed. Which means a more Awkward mounting surface which can carry less weight than the Yakima can because the bars are spaced closer together. Yakima bars allow you to space them as far apart as you like for a customizable load. This has allowed me to carry a 75-pound 15 foot canoe on top of mine all summer long and a 6000 Mile Road Trip. You might be able to find a really good deal on Craigslist. The mounting clips are vehicle-specific and you can get them online for very cheap, you can spend as much as $90 on just these little metal clips from a dealer. If you shop on eBay you may be able to get them for a $10 per clip. My Yakima Q Bar racks have held on very well and I don't even teather them to the front or the back I only have it connected to the bars, it's very stable and trustworthy. Mileage with a 15 foot canoe has not suffered much.

I have no experience with cheap racks. I would not trust one myself. If I were you I would get on Craigslist and look for some Yakima Q bars for your car. If all you're carrying is skis why don't you carry them inside the car? Q bars are actually fairly heavy duty and are suitable for very heavy loads.

Why don't you put your skis in the trunk and use the ski bag passthrough? That is what I use and it is way better than some dumb rack on your roof. I do have the roof rack for our cars, but hate using it because it causes wind noise. I will probably sell mine at some point. Don't know about aftermarket ones.

What about the ski pass-through boot that folds out of the rear arm-rest middle-seat?

I heard that in terms of wind-noise, Yakima Whispbars are the best. Cheapest I've seen was a used sedan set for $200, and it might've even sold within a day or two.
Wonder if it would be any better if there was sound insulation (ex: Raamat) on the roof skin, and sunroof delete (free factory option, common in Europe)

Not that I'm suggesting this now, everyone will probably agree that welding a panel in your roof to go skiing is more on the involving side.

CL searching for sure, also use different search words, some people don't know what they are selling.

I just picked up a full OEM B6 sedan roof rack with the snowboard carrier attached for $75 from CL.

Nice. When I was looking for my rack there were a lot of people who had them listed but were very slow to get back to me. I actually walked into rack attack in St Louis Park Minnesota and just bought the damn thing. I think it cost me four hundred bucks with locks, I'm always paranoid about people trying to steal my s***. So I also got a couple cut resistant cables to help attach it to the bars. When I'm not near the vehicle. As for ski and snowboard gear if you have anything nice at all a criminal will steal it. I've seen too many friends lose their expensive stuff one time I told a guy to check his gear or it would get stolen. I gave this big long lecture to the guys on the way there... It only cost a dollar to check your board well his brand new Burton Snowboard got stolen. I found that people online and especially Craigslist are slow to respond and are not really all that motivated so maybe expect them to be pretty slow about it. If you need this thing now like I did just go buy it. It comes with a lifetime warranty. But the same rack system I bought was listed for around 20, 70 and $100 on Craigslist. It was all over the place, people don't know what they have or they just want to get rid of it.
