Car is a 2010 2.0t, Tensioners and PCV have been done in the last 5k miles car has 115k and is stock. It drives totally fine and I can't hear any noise when driving and shifting gears.
I'm new to the car but I'm guessing it isn't 'normal'?
EDIT: A little research has come up with the probability of it being wastegate rattle and VW/Audi solved this with a metal clip you slip over the actuator. Does this sound right?

If you drive over 5000 rpm for a bit does the p0299 check engine light come on?

Yeah let me know what you guys find. I'm new to the motor and the B8 chassis in general and I went out for a drive with my cousin who's a VW tech. There's definitely a flutter if I'm in 3rd and get into boost it just doesn't feel 100%. I'm going to replace the DV as well to see if that might contribute to the issue. I come from a 2014 Jetta SE with the 1.8t and that motor is dead silent compared to the loud 2.0t motor!
I had this exact same noise, when the engine is winding down or coasting....it is
100% the turbo wastegate.
When the car was cold (make sure cold!), I reached my hand under the exhaust manifold and could barely feel the wastegate rod on the turbo. With the tip of my finger that I could get on there, I was able to move the rod back and forth (like from left side of car to right), which meant it was loose.
Took the car into a dealership, they investigated the noise, and replaced the turbo. Said the bushing inside the wastegate was loose. It is a very common issue on these cars, and we all have our turbo warranty extended to 8 years / 130000 km because of this issue. If you fit inside this, go to a dealer and get a new turbo. Otherwise, I think it is OK to drive until ultimately your turbo will fail and you will get a CEL for low boost.
