What would you guys do with it? I am currently waiting on getting another 01E to continue my swap, so this tranny is extra.

I have the 01E in pieces in the garage, and since I bought the JHM full rebuild kit I have the DVD with instructions on the rebuild, I thought I would put it back together. The shop that took it apart to do the full rebuild said it was beat on pretty bad, and the items that have seen the abuse can cost several thousands of dollars to replace. I have never really gotten into wrenching on transmissions, but since I really can't fuck this one up more than it is, I thought I would give a try. Best case scenario, I have a backup 01E in case I need or want to work on the one I use on the swap. It functioned before we took it apart. Worst case scenario I have a boat anchor I need to get rid of.

I'm really not a glutton for punishment, just want to continue to expand my knowledge on how things work.

    What would you do?

I mean, what happened that isn't fixed with a rebuild kit? Was the transmission run dry, or something?

If you have the space to lay out the trans components, I would keep it and open it up. I'm a tinkerer and love to look at how stuff works so I would open it up, and lay out the components as they come out. Take an assessment of what you have in front of you, and decide on whether you want to rebuild a stock trans or build it up for more power. You can look at bearing and gear combinations that would take the additional hp/tq.

Again, that's me and my curiosity. If you want to just move on, let me know what you would want for it. May be interested for a future swap.

It would depend on what exactly makes it "pretty bad." Any actual details on what components are bad?

A little more information, basically pictures

OK, so yes I was vague on the "pretty bad" in my first post. I had posted up pictures in the build thread I was sharing with brokenwrench, and didn't even think to post them in this thread.

So here goes. I took the transmission to the shop and asked them to do the rebuild kit on it, thinking (as you guys assume) that a full rebuild kit would take me back to square one with this thing, right? Once they got it taken apart, they basically stopped and brought it back to me, all in pieces. I really thought the guy was playing a practical joke on me (we have a rapport like that) and thought he got a bunch of junky parts out of his scrap bin to try and get me. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. So now I am looking to do what Hambone101 said--try and put humpty dumpty back together again for fun of tinkering.

Here are some of the culprit parts to give you an idea of what was indicative to their builder that it was junk. Like I mentioned--I know little of what this stuff is supposed to look like at 140K miles, but I trust the transmission guy and I see the wear on some of the pieces. I thought these were pretty robust units, and I expect some wear, but most of what I see seems excessive. The first three pictures show splines I assume are built with extremely close tolerance, closer than would allow such wear to happen if not abused. Personally, I think some kid got a hold of the thing and did burn outs and clutch-less shifts all day long in the high school parking lot, but even so...Thoughts?
