Question RS5 brake service- Dealer cost

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Everyone:

Rather than add to an old post that morphed into a different discussion I decided to start a new thread.

At 28K miles my RS5 needs new brakes. The car vibrates when I brake at highway speeds so I am going to need new rotors. If I source the parts from ECS and have an independent do the labor it will cost me about $2100. The dealer has quoted me $2500 for the whole thing. I am not interested in aftermarket parts at this stage; I like the ECS wave rotors but they do not have one for the rears so I am not too keen on the front rotors not matching the rear one.

Have any of you had the brakes serviced by the dealer? If so how much have you paid?

    Thanks

Do not get OEM rotors - I'm on my third set at 25k miles and they just started vibrating again.

I'm about to switch to ECS

ECS in front, OEM in the rear. I run that setup on track, never had an issue with the rears.
Fronts are too soft for track use. I never had any vibration or anything while I was on the OEM's. If you go to an independent shop, go to Griffin. Become a member of the Audi Club (PM me and I can help). You'll also get a 10% discount. Have them bed the brakes in really well. Its usually Nate or Gabe who work on my car.

Since you're using it on street only, get the ECS front, OEM rear. Stoptech 309 Pads for the front. Can stick to stoptech or to OEM's for the rear. The stoptech pads for the front are about 250'ish (both sides), compared to about 400 for OEM.

Can you do me a huge favor and PM me a side view of your car? I'm concerned about the contrast between the rear OEM and the ECS front rotors.

I, too, am running ECS rotors up front and OEM in the rear. You don't have anything to be concerned about.

I opted for EBC red stuff pads on the front instead of the Stop Tech pads.

Also, for what it's worth, I had my dealership install the aftermarket parts. They charged me 2 hours labor to do so. All in all, I think I was around $1500 total for parts and labor.

In the upcoming weeks when I have the time. The car is at Audi for some engine bay rattles but as soon as I have it back I'll swap out the fronts to other the 380mm ECS upgrade kit or the 365 ECS rotors

I'm sure I read somewhere in a post from Jason @ ECS that they were developing matching rear Tru-Float wave style rotors for the RS5. Might be worth reaching out to them to see how far away the release is?

ummmmmmmm. Although I have gotten some great advice, it seems that no one has had their brakes serviced by the dealer. I am still waiting (hoping) for some baseline dealer cost.

Is there anyway to purchase the brackets and rotors alone? I have new pads and already have ss lines, there's no point to buy the entire kit.

Seriously, don't get the OEM rotors and pads unless you want to risk warping. You dodged a bullet so far...

Can't find my quote from before but it was around $2300 for the dealer to replace fronts with OE parts.

I have. The cost of just the rotors was about 1500 + labor + pads (OEM), came to about 2500-2700. so 2100 for the whole thing is not bad.

Again, go with ECS stock sized and shaped rotors. Not the bigger size, not the round, but wavy ones. That way in the future, if you need replacements, you can buy just the ring for much much cheaper.

As far as I know ECS doesn't sell just the rings, but they give a discount on a new set to the original owner. My front pads are coming up for replacement soon, they are down to 30%, but I think the rotors might be good for another set, so I probably won't be able to take them up on their discount, but if I end up getting new rotors, I can let you know about the cost. You can hit me up, too, if you want to see the rotors in person. I think they look awesome, much better than the OEMs and it doesn't bother me that the rear looks different. The rear caliper is different anyway and if you had gotten the OEM carbon ceramic fronts, they would be different, too. I think having different rotors on the front visually underscores that they are really doing most of the work.

Here's a close-up. Don't have a side shot that shows front and rear. As for the cost, I had Griffin in Berkeley install mine, along with SS lines and better fluid. With parts and labor it was about $1500 for the front. I put on matching Hawk pads on the rear a couple of thousand miles later. Still have the original rear rotors. The rear really doesn't do much work. My rear pads still have more than 75% left. I do recommend you put matching pads front and rear. I noticed that the brake balance was off with Hawks on the front and OEM pads on the rear, not to mention that the front wheels stayed cleaner a lot longer while the rears turned black within a few days.

Had this same issue with mine, never got it done because I traded it in, but my plan was to go, factory rotors hawk hps pads all around. I didn't want mis-matched rotors either.

    Angry ECS rear Rotors

ECS just announced rear rotors matching their front one. If only they had done so a week ago.
