    Transmission shuttering in comfort mode

Hi everyone, I have a B9 A4 with about 1,500 miles on it. Sometimes when I'm starting out and/or on an incline it feels like the transmission is trying to find the proper gear for a few seconds then finally gets it. This produces a shuttering feeling. I've noticed that this is typically what happens in comfort mode.

Given that I have switched the mode to auto and it seems much better. Every time I get into the car it seems to default to comfort though. Has anyone experienced this? I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there's an issue of some sort. Any insight would be much appreciated!

Am I the only one with this issue?

The fact that your car defaults to comfort mode is intriguing. I havent left Dynamic mode since picking up my car in the first place. Every time I start my car its still in Dynamic. So in that regard, you are the first with that "defaulting to comfort" that I have seen.

That's weird. It seems like every time I get in the car it's in comfort. I've tried doing it through hitting the buttons on the dash and also when going in through menu, then vehicle.

I get a little "shudder" once in a while too. But I think the milage is still too low (a few hundred) on mine for me to decide it's an issue. This is actually not my 1st B9 A4, my first one did not "shudder" ever. But there were also a few strange things that seemed to work themselves out over time, putting on the miles. The default to "comfort" is not normal though. Should stay on it's last setting.

If you turn you car off with Drive Select in Dynamic and transmission in S, is your car in Drive Select Comfort instead of Dynamic or is your transmission in D instead of S with Drive Select still being in Dynamic? The latter is normal, the first is not.

I keep my A4 in Auto and it always defaults to that when I start the car again. As others have said, default to anything other then where you left it in Drive Select isn't normal. The only thing that should default is your shifter from Sport back to Drive.

Could the shuddering you are feeling also be the result of the engine Stop/Start being on? I turn that off as soon as I get in the car.

Referring back to the OP's "shuddering" ...

Is anyone experiencing any drivetrain "shudder" in their B9 s-tronic quattro? I have done a couple thousand miles in two other B9 A4's (also quattro) and never felt any strange drivetrain behavior, but now I am in the B9 A4 quattro I ordered 5 months ago and it seems the transmission clunks often. From a standstill 1st gear seems to engage kinda rough and slow and when I take my foot off the gas going about 35 mph (2nd thru 4th gears I assume) the whole transmission kind of clunks, I guess in short it feels like the clutch is engaging and disengaging slowly and rough creating odd drivetrain movement. This is all happening in "auto-D" mode, in "auto-S" mode the behavior is lessened but still present.

    Am I making any sense?

Thanks everyone for the replies! I verified that it doesn't default back to comfort. When I was changing the mode via the toggle switches, I think it would switch without the screen popping up to show what mode I'm in. I'm not that tech savvy so that's part of it.

Mine doesn't really clunk, but it's almost like it's shifting really fast trying to find the right gear and in doing so it feels like it's shuttering. If you hit the gas harder It goes right away. This is mostly seen when starting on inclines and when in the city going 25-35 mph.

I took it to the dealer and they said everything is fine. I'm wondering if I just don't hit the gas hard enough.

Talked to my SA today and explained how my transmission was behaving, she said that it does "learn" driving habits for the first 5,000 miles, however, the drivetrain shudder and clunks I am experiencing although moderate are not normal and she wants me to bring the car in Monday morning. We'll see.

I think that is just the hill holding mechanism of the DSG at work. Giving just a little gas instead of a big boot usually helps to smooth things up.
