    Passat trans cage is an upgrade to an a4 short shifter?

    I was on a b5 Facebook group and a guy mentioned that he swapped a Passat "trans cage" into his a4 when he put a short shifter in and how it greatly tightened up shifts. A quick Google search could not yield anything. Thoughts?

    Wtf is a trans cage? Are you taking about a shifter box? The thing the shift shifter sits in? If you get a later facelift non push down reverse shifter box. You can get the vw rebuild part from a Passat for $25. It's solid as fuck now. Ima make a thread on it one of these days. Lol.

    Do the gear changes feel more tactile with it, or is there just less slop? For only $25 I'd certainly consider doing it haha

    Wow, that's a huge difference. I wonder how mine looks. Have 205k km on my car for reference.

    So I just need that part? On an otherwise stock gearbox.

    Lift up your shifter surround and make sure you have the facelift shifter. If you have a prefacelift one well shit. get one from a partout, probably wont be easy to swap out.

    The "oem/passat shifter cage" and the stock pivot ball are made from nylon with PTFE(teflon). The best lube I have found is Super Lube Silicone Lubricating Grease with Syncolon (PTFE).

    This is the ebay short shifter I purchesed years ago for my 97. From use the bottom pivot bolt became lose because the bolt was too short to reach the nyloc part of the nut and the slop came back. To remedy this on my 01 I used RED loctite on the nut. Make sure you make ALIGNMENT marks on the shifter bolts your touching so you can get it aligned easy, and not guessing like a fcuker like I did with my 97 (then half assed it and it didnt end up good lol.) PICS OF ALLIGNMENT MARKS TOMORROW. (if i remember lol)

    Well shit, I have a 99.0 so I don't have the facelift shifter. So ill need that and the passat piece. Found this thread on the subject http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...Prefacelift-A4

    Is it worth it if you don't put on a short shifter? Don't want to increase wear to my synchros. How about just replacing the original pieces with new oem parts? Should improve it and bring it back to how it was when it was new.

    I don't know how easy it would be to swap the box out with the trans in the car... But I'm thinking since my 97 had a bastard shift rod only on 97s 98-01 should be the same rod so you would only need the actual shifter base that sits inside the box that rides on the gold rods and holds the "shifter pivot surround cage". I'm not 100% on this. If you do some research let us know is this thread and the one i make please. I know the lockout Is the key you press into the shift rod so just don't do that and you should be fine.


    The nylon pivot ball is the same material as the cage so In theory it has worn smaller then new. But at $18 worth a try. You could run the short shifter on the longest of the 3 positions but fuck it man. Yolo. Or hope the shifter you get from a partout is mint enough for ya. Probably won't be as tight as mine.

    Awesome, thanks for all the info. The stock shifter leaves a lot to be desired in terms of feel, so anything to improve it is of great interest to me haha

    Just to be clear you can't use the Passat part on the prefacelift shifter? From this it sounds like you could.

    Yea if the 97 was weird like that then it would be 98.5-99.0 since that's the era of mid facelift. 98.0 is the essentially same as the 97.

    I bought a trans from a prefacelift car for my facelift 01 and it came with the shifter box included. The rod that holds the box to the trans is different between facelift and prefacelift as the shifter box itself is different. You'll need that rod and that rod is a PITA to replace as it has an 8mm hex bolt holding it to the trans and no room to get to it. I upgraded to the delrin shift bushing from JHM and their kit comes with a normal bolt that you can get to very easily. Also, you should be able to keep the box in the car is you put the new shifter "assembly/cage" in as i think the mounting holes in the box are the same, i'm assuming that, someone should double check part numbers between the both boxes. Also, thanks for posting the part number for the "socket/cage" thingy, been looking for it for months. Also, does anyone have a bad one of these parts that they dont want that i could have? I want one to reverse engineer it and make my own at school. I have a 3D print lab that i would use and the material printed can be quite strong so i think it will be okay. I would tear mine apart but would be nice to have a spare.
