    Headlight questions---need some help!

    2003 A4 1.8T with OEM Xenon
Hit a deer, shop replaced DS headlight with Halogen and tossed the old one.

Long story short, I want to get back to HID on the DS, but I am not too keen on chunking up the cash for a whole new OEM unit.

Question 1: Can I use the Halogen housing and just pick up a ballast?
1a: Can I do the same for the auto-leveler?

Question 2: Should I even look at aftermarket ballasts? I am assuming I will have to get a pair so the headlights match. (And this route I lose the auto leveling feature, correct?)

    Looking for some guidance.

    Thanks,
    Brady

If this went through insurance, I would demand a Xenon replacement headlight unless you paid for the repair yourself and chose the halogen option.

You need a proper Xenon D1S projector in the housing, so you would need to swap the projector, then install a D1S bulb, then ballast.

I don't know what your budget is, but you can pick up a Xenon headlight on eBay, swap it in 30 minutes and be done.

Or you can upgrade your lighting with a Morimoto kit from TRS.

    Did not go through insurance.
As this is my secondary car, it sat in storage for 6 months before I saw it after it had gotten fixed.
Shop wouldn't replace because it was beyond 30 days. Shitty situation, but it happened.

I am looking for options to fix, eljay I appreciate your response.

This would require me obtaining a Halogen housing for the passenger side, correct?

I think you can pull the projector from your existing housing and swap the projector from TRS in its place.

You can convert the new halogen headlight and the original HID xenon headlight using the Morimoto kit.

Curious to know how the Morimotos go if you decide to go that route.

I don't believe the 30 days has any relevance here. The shop installed the wrong part. If more than 30 days past before that fact was discovered, to bad for the shop. Does the shop guarantee their work for only 30 days otherwise? An error by the shop does not become a non error just because more than 30 days after repairs occurred. If the shop continues to refuse responsibility then take the case to small claims court. You would win the case for sure. A new OEM xenon headlight from Audi cost more than $1000. Installing the wrong part is negligent work by the shop.
This is not really any different than the shop installing a fender that was the wrong color.

Collision repair shops also typically have lifetime warranty as standard, showing that they stand behind their work because it was quality work in the first place. Meaning they're trying to assure you the new fender won't rust off in a year. Because it shouldn't.
