power steering fluid everywhere, lids of steering. no codes

So tonight. I was driving and all of a sudden my car stopped wanting to steer. Pulled into oreillys, fluid everywhere under my car. Would a bad pump throw a code? Need some help trouble shooting. Otherwise it's going to the local euro fixer upper place.

Not the pump, check your hoses. Mines blew , same thing. Turned out to be the return line.

I think I had the same thing a few years ago. Do you have to replace the pump too when it gets air in the system? That's what the indie shop told me and of course the S4 PS pump is 3x the cost of the A4 PS pump

So far all i have read is to have a shop do it. I also have 2 front axels B5 perches and 034 motor mounts to do. Should i have them do that at the same time? I am under a tight schedule and i do not have the time to do it myself.

My power steering pump died, which I'm guessing caused a lot of pressure in the system and the pressure release hole on the power steering reservoir cap spewed fluid all over my engine bay. Thankfully my hoses didn't burst, but then again the pump was a major pain in the ass to install. I was driving down the road and all of a sudden a huge billow of steam came from my engine bay and my steering started to get heavy. No error codes at all

Yea it's a pain in the ass to do it. Most likely it's the one that connects to the rack. Set me back about 400. Had the hose made though for 20 bucks. Oem is way more

Pump no, hopefully. Depends on how far you ran without fluid. They burn out. There is a process to get the air out, saw it on a diy.

Never heard of such a thing. You can usually work the steering back and forth to work the air out of the system.

2 miles isn't to bad. Mine was like 20, I had it towed to be safe. Yeah getting the air out was like what allroad said, with cap off the reservoir.

My pump lasted through two blown racks and a blown return hose. It should be ok if you don't drive it too far - I didn't drive it at all without any fluid, although it did get some mileage with low fluid.

I am not sure there is a fuse, I believe it runs off the chain drive on back of motor.

Hose and rack could be changed in a day if you have the parts available. Definitely a PITA job but the right tools (22mm offset juuuust right) makes it much easier. Hopefully it's just the hose though, even at $110 or so it's much cheaper than a rack lol.

It's really easy. Top the reservoir off, turn the car on and immediately shut it off. If there's air in the system you'll notice that the fluid level in the reservoir went down a bit. The first time you do it the level might not drop, but if you're sure there's air in the system try it a few more times. Top the reservoir back off and repeat until the fluid level in the reservoir stops going down.

Low pressure hose. Rack was fine and pump still good. Including checking area looking for leaks.

I bought mine from genuineaudiparts.com which is where it was cheapest actually. Was $104.. generally floats around $115-120 for the return hose (OEM) from other places:
    P/N 8E1422891AK "Return hose"

Also here is the banjo bolt and crush washers:
P/N WHT000507 for "Pressure hose Bolt" (banjo bolt)
P/N N0138487 for "Steering gear and linkage Pump and hoses Seal Type 1 Type 1" (crush washers)

Return hose is #12 in pic (note it is drawn in 2 pieces but it is actually just one hose)

Thanks badger! I thought it was that hose. Same problem last year on my allroad but the leak was in the front of the car. Turn out to be the clamp to the cooler lines.

The other side connects to the rack correct?

Why was I so stupid to ask for the part number? I drove home tonight about 8.5 miles without fluid. As soon as I picked up some food and turned onto the on-ramp, it just stop steering. Didn't want to pull over late at night so I drove home. Was that a bad idea?

Got into my driveway and put some fluid in there and it's bubbling like crazy. Fluid seems to be leaking right at the circular opening of the belly pan near the driver side front wheel. Hoping it's as simple as my wife's allroad. God damn I love this car.

Pump is driven by the PTO on the rear of the engine, no electrics involved. Even when the fluid has all run out, the gears inside the pump body still have a coating of oil so "for a while", they'll turn without damage. If you have to drive it with the hose busted, pour a couple of ounces of fluid in the tank just before starting and driving off. That will give the pump a "dose" of lube. You don't really want to drive far, but in an extreme situation, I could see a guy stopping the engine every few miles and pouring a couple more ounces in to relube the pump. Keep your revs as low as possible so that the pump turns as slowly as possible. I would have no concerns personally about driving a few miles from my house to the shop if I pre-dosed the pump. But as always, determine your own level of risk.

I'm never going to get my wife's car finished, because everytime I see one of these posts, I go out and replace that part so's I don't have to hit it again : ) I'm sure that car will actually end up being brand-new by the time I'm finished.....I'll be single, but it will be done : )

I try to be proactive too but it's getting crazy with this car, I still dig it though.

I was able to move the return hose to make sure it was coming from there and sure enough, it is. The return hose is leaking right behind the bottom support bracket of the Aux radiator. Must have been rubbing for the last 12 years and finally decided to let go after I purchased the car and join this forum....can't pinpoint where all my bad luck is coming from. lol

Stay strong my brahdah.. my s4 been in the shop for the past 3 months. I'm about 8k into it. Bad valve seals. Heads are being rebuilt by JHM at the moment. However, making the best of it by also getting a timing job, clutch kit, oil check valves, valley pan gasket, straight downpipes, and intake spacers. Should be a brand new car by the time I get it back.
