    Secondary Air Pump Help! Compatibility?

Well I am in the process of fixing a faulty thermostat on my 99 Avant 2.8, full water pump timing belt service, and figured I would address the noisy secondary air pump while I have the hole front end off. I grabbed a pump off a newer A4, when I was walking thru the junk yard a few weeks back, it was right in front of my face had to grab it. So just now I pulled the unit off of my car to compare, and there is a slight difference. Does anyone know how I can tell if they are compatible?

The high pitched whine from my existing unit is getting annoying, hopefully I can get this fixed up before I put it back together.

    Secondary Air Pump Help!

In my searches I seen a write up in AudiWorld about rebuilding my existing unit, but when I opened it, there was no clip and nut to remove the blade....

Power connector is in the same place, and plugs in no problem. Just don't know what differences there could be. Maybe I can connect the new one and run the VCDS program to test it? I just don't want to blow any fuses, or worse if the unit isn't right.

Just plug it in and drive. It's an air-pump, it has no computer, no fancy electronics, nothing technical about it at all. And very likely more-or-less exactly the same. I used one off a Passat once when mine went bad on an A6 a few years ago.
    They're the same.

I tested the new pump, and it worked just as the other did, only thing that was different of course was the mounting. My pump had a large rubber ring that sandwiched between the pump and mount, the new one had built in rubber stand offs. The new pump bracket did not fit on my car, and there was no way to mount it by simply bolting it to my existing bracket. So I came up with the plan to cut off the mounting portion of the new bracket, and build what I will now call the SAI Adapter Plate. This adapter bolts into the existing bracket just like the rubber ring, but is drilled to accept the metal studs on the rubber standoffs of the new pump. All is good now!
