    Audi A6.2.7 Turbo help!!!

I currently have my 2002 Audi A6 2.7 engine out of the car for replacing transmission. My turbos were working fine. My question is now that I have my engine out and can see the turbos is there anything visually that will tell me that my turbos are bad?

From that back where you can see the turbine it was nice and dry no oil. On the other side where it comes out to the hose it had some oil.

    Any advice would be good.

    Thanks

The turbo compressor & intake tubing will most likely have a little oil in it, that's normal. Both of my 2.7's are still dripping oil from the intake side after several months sitting in the garage, and at least one of them ran just fine before I pulled it out. The exhaust/turbine side will likely be mostly dry since the temps seen there are plenty high to burn off any hydrocarbons which pass through.

Was your engine consuming oil at a high rate before you pulled it? Does it smoke when it runs? Are both of your cats still intact? Others can offer their input, but that's about the only method I know of to test the turbo seals without taking them to a shop for a pressure test.

I'm currently replacing my torque converter. I pulled the engine and found low compression, so I plan on rebuilding or re-ringing the pistons pending the results of my leak down test...hoping to get to it today.

When I purchased my Audi 2.5 years ago, I needed to put a little oil in it very two months, maybe 1/4 qt, which accelerated to up to a quart every 5-6 weeks till now. Miles on it went from 124K to 149K. When I removed the turbo, I had some oil draining out of the turbo, intake charge side. I purchased two rebuild kits for the turbos. There are plenty of rebuild videos on the Ko3 turbos on youtube. Very easy to rebuild this type of turbo, just make sure you mark the orientation of everything as it is a balanced unit.

Try checking turbine for play? When my K03s went out the shaft would wiggle around a bit. Tried it with the new K04s filled with oil and there was VERY little play. And a smoooth spinning turbine.
