Turbo Housing Crack!!

So I've been doing a tear down on the motor the past few days to replace what I suspect is a leaking head gasket.

In doing so, upon removing the exhaust manifold I found the following..






Does anyone know what this white substance is? My money is on ash from burning oil, but could it be coolant? Is there anyway to tell for certain?

Plus I'm not sure what acceptable movement in the turbo shaft looks like.. so I've recorded this short video.



I'm not sure if that means the turbo is shot.. I'm guessing it's not the best. In any case, I was making boost before I took her apart. At this point I'm thinking I'll just stick it back in as I've already dropped around 1,400 into this repair endeavor.

I would be looking for a good used turbo if I were you. I wouldn't spend the time reinstalling that, knowing that it was going to have to come out soon when it finally goes kaput.

I'd love to put a used turbo in, but like I said above.. it's a lot of money
