    Let's talk shift knobs.

I know, what could we possibly talk about. But my question is what shift knob do you prefer? Specifically, material. I have access to 3D printers as we'll as a machine shop at school and I'm trying to figure out what material to use for my final product. I know metals tend to get hot in summer and cold in winter, but they give good weight to the knob. I've printed a few knobs and they come out okay and work fine, but weight nothing. What do you guys think?

Delrin is a popular material because it does not hold temperatures, meaning it won't get hot in summer or cold in winter. Don't think you can 3d print with it though.

Print one out, replace center of knob with lead weight. Bam.

I prefer leather. And have been looking for a good shift knob without spending a fortune, but don't want a POS eBay knob. I have an early 5-speed knob (97-98) in my car and hate it. It reminds me of a Honda Prelude shifter

A while back I began working on a 3D-printable shift knob design which would utilize hobby weights (the sort of thing you'd put into a pinewood derby car).
It's a similar shape to the stock knob, and ideally would use the stock shift knob's shift pattern coin.

Guess I haven't been totally happy with my design idea, but I've only ever used stock A4 shift knobs so don't have any additional ideas.

If you could figure out how to wrap the aluminum knob in leather or alcantara that would be ideal. I know it's possible as it's been done many times, just not sure how difficult it is.

I hate my stock A4 shift knob, it's an awkward shape to me. Been looking for a reasonably priced option that looks good but doesn't cost a ton

I would love to do a delrin with a metal center but. My machining teacher tells me it's hard to machine and hard to get it look good. I'll have to get some material and play around with it. I can print one that would use out stock coin, or whatever coin I would want. Wrapping in leather would be interesting and I would have to play around with it.

What if you were able to print holes in the sides of the knob to allow for stitching the leather, stitch it directly to the knob rather than actually wrapping it?

Leathed my own out of delrin and wouldn't look back! Stays cool in the heat and doesn't freeze in the cold, always nice to hold and doesn't add unnecessary Weight to the shifter

What tool did you use on the lathe? I still have a bunch more research to do ok this but delrin is so cheap I'm sure messing a couple up wouldn't break my wallet.

Just standard carbide tipped bits, the key is keeping them razor sharp to avoid the delrin bunching up and messing up sections, just take it nice and slow and keep it sharp and it should be okay. Still, Don't be expecting a flawlessly smooth result like the cnc'd ones you order online

I might have access to a CNC machine. How bad did the chuck mark up the delrin?

Marked it pretty easily, id recommend making the hole and thread part half waf into machining once you have a round block, putting a threaded bolt in it and clamping that in the Chuck then machining the other marks down

Sounds good. I'll have to try that. I can get a foot of delrin for about 30$. Is that a good price? http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant...10&top_cat=181
