Question Is the 3.0 TDI intercooler direct fit on? (All OEM Parts Bought)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'll buy the OEM 3.0 TDI intercooler (8K0145805E) from the Audi dealer. I want to know whether this will fit without any other equipment, modes or trimming? I've seen some threads stating that it's a bit struggling issue.

I need to know this because I want it to be installed by the authorized Audi service. If any modifications are requested they may not install it.

    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Bought all the necessary parts. Will post the pictures.

I had to trim the plastic guards/air channels that go on each side of the inter cooler, but this plastic is so thin you can cut it with a nice pair of scissors. Other than this minor trimming, it clipped right in for me, no other modifications needed.

Thanks for the response. It's all upto the service, hope they wont deny on doing a minor trim work. Or maybe they would want to change that air duct to the one that suits the 3.0 tdi intercooler.

Btw, the oem intercooler costs quite cheap at the dealer, only $150 plus $60 for labor.

EDIT: It's $350 at the audi dealer

Another thing, the orijinal hoses are 2.25" the 3.0 tdi IC is 2.5".

Will the orijinal rubber hoses fit without any problem? Will it pop out in the future due to stress?

Here are the parts needed for installing the 3.0 TDI IC:

1- OEM IC (Behr 8ML376746181, OEM code: 8K0145805E)
    Price: $170

2- OEM left-right air guides (Part no: 8K0121283F and 8K0121284F)
    Price: $22

    Will install them tomorrow

I installed the IC on Sunday.

It was pretty easy taking off the bumper and IC. However the original 2.25" hoses were a pain in the ass to fit the 2.5" inlet-outlet of the new IC. I was really close to give up:)
Other than that I also installed the new air guides rather than trimming the old ones. The total cost for this upgrade was $200. I think it is worth doing this upgrade especially for a tuned car. I like to be at the safe side.

    Finished:)

    Great info here!
I can see now that the 3.0 TDI intercooler is thicker when compared side by side with the OE intercooler.
For stage 1/2 applications, what's the measurable benefit here? Do you know?
Just curious if this dropped your intake charge temps and if so, by how much.

I'm trying to quantify spending the $200 by convincing myself with facts, lol.

Buy a TR8 or TR11 for about 250 and then 20 or so for a couple hoses and clamps and you've got a much better alternative.

Here is a IAT compare log I mad. Found an old log from the stock IC with same ambient temp at 18C. (Car's setup is also the same except for the IC of cource :))

I also had a log with stock IC at 13C and the max temp I could see in it was 42C so at 18C the new 3.0TDI IC performs better then 2.0TFSI stock IC at 13C.

So question is then how many HP is 8C colder IAT? Any one?

    Regards,
This is the only comparison I've seen anyone do between the stock and tdi IC. Not clear if he averaged multiple pulls. Graphs for back to back pulls would be better to compare, but it appears to make a decent difference at 18C ambient.

I agree with Lambda13. For the cost of a Treadstone and hoses, you can't go wrong. Lettuce has some good graphs from a TR8 his thread to compare. (context.eax graph is 18C vs. lettuce is 26C ambient)

    2nd gear pull:

    3rd gear pull:

Max temps in the 2nd gear pull were only 33 degrees C while staying pretty much steady between 30 and 32 during the entire pull, actually getting colder at higher RPMs. That's 6-10 degrees F over ambient through the entire RPM range at 20-23 PSI.

Max temps in the 3rd gear pull hit 35 degrees C, rising from a baseline of 30 C. The temps stayed steady until 5k RPMs at which point they rose to 35 and then quickly dropped to below baseline (29 C) when letting off the throttle. That's 6-15 degrees F over ambient through the entire RPM range at 20-23 PSI.

Pretty damn impressive performance from a $250 intercooler.

The tdi IC part # Mussa posted is the best way to search on ebay: 8K0145805E
For reference, make sure the compatible car is a C7 A6 3.0 TDI

Nissens is the OEM manufacturer and their part # is 96618.
Best price I've found for a Nissens tdi IC is from Rock Auto at about $170:
    http://www.rockauto.com/en/partsearc...le.com+URL+%2F

This one is $100 but isn't branded.

I was just about to post that Hans Autoparts one, I think I will go with that one.

Thanks for the help Malk. FYI, I did ebay search 8K0145805E and that's how I came across the ebay one. That same seller does have 8K0145805G as well. (see below) This is why I assumed the 8K0145805E was correct.

Thank you for pointing out you did search by part number and I stand corrected. It does look like the one you ordered is the tdi size part # 8K0145805E
I was looking at compatible cars and the first page is all 4 cylinder turbo A4's but there's also S4's listed as compatible so that list is wrong.

Got my IC in today. It doesn't have a part number on it, but I measured the core and it matches the exact dimensions of 8K0145805E, the OEM 3.0 TDI intercooler, so it is the correct one. I haven't installed it yet, so I cannot comment on performance yet.

Anyway there are more available for $69 if interested.

Now, I just need to buy an RS grill for my A5 so I have extra reason to rip my bumper off

I didn't do any logs or measurements. Above there is a comparison log for oem vs tdi . Hope this gives an idea.
Now the whether is cold but, after long hard drives it still pulls strong and no turbo lag. I'am happy with the upgrade. I don't recommend an IC bigger than 8 lt unless the hp is 270+, it may cause turbo lag.

    congrats on the new IC!

for the hoses, I brought a pot of boiling water to dip the hoses in for a few minutes to help with the inlet/outlet fitment

@Mussa (Or anyone who can answer), those part numbers for the Left/Right Air Guides - are those the part numbers for the original B8 A4 or are those different ones with larger slots for the upgraded 3.0 Intercooler? I was just about to purchase these along with the intercooler but couldn't tell if they are the original small ones or the larger ones! If they're the originals, and need modification... then I'll just cut mine to fit rather than buying new ones and having to cut those as well.

    Thanks!

Those part numbers are for 3.0 TDI A4. For 2.0 TFSI the part numbers are 8K0121283G and 8K0121284G. You can either buy them for direct fitment or trim the small ones.

Pretty straight forward don't know that a guide exists or would be needed, order the nissens from Rock auto. It is perfectly fine for stage 2, but would not prevent heat soak with the k04. Actually after thinking about it you could download one of the aftermarket guides from apr, ie, ecs... But again pretty straight forward.

Does anyone have a picture of how they trimmed the air guides? Just trying to go at it with a final picture in mind rather than trial/error approach. Thanks!
