Thumbs up B9 Allroad - Who's Stepping Up?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I received a call from the dealer that they're arriving, albeit no Prestige-level cars just yet. I'll be heading down to check them out soon, but I'm still on the fence.

Who here is taking the leap? Is everyone put off the by the pricing and lack of 'real' Quattro, or is this going the way of accepting that the Allroad isn't really a performance vehicle and simply more of an Adventuremobile?

Had one at a local dealership last week and the thing is Amazing looking inside and out. For the Ultra Quattro it will stay engaged 100% of the time when in sport or dynamic mode FYI.

I will be considering one coming off a lease in 2-3 years to replace my C6 Avant which will be 10 plus years old then.

Not sure on the size/rear seat room... I'm going to whine for a moment; come on Audi of America bring the A6 Avant back .

Pass ..that stick on multi media screen looks like shit.
If I can find a used B8.5 AR with the options I want Ill hang onto that until the beta testers work the bugs out of the V90.

My GF is thinking about getting rid of her 2016 Allroad for the B9. Just need to drive one first.

    B9 Allroad - Who's Stepping Up?

I drove one last week. Super nice inside & out, and the new motor/trans combo is very nice. I'd like to drive one with a tune to see how it responds. I haven't heard anything about E85 yet, but a corn tune could make it an awesome performer.

That said, right after I drove it, I took the salesman for a ride in my allroad, and remembered why I like mine so much. I'm sure I'll probably have a B9 at some point, but not yet.

Right now, I like how your 8.5 looks. Probably need to get used to B9 looks... I'm planning to enjoy my B8 for a bit longer :-)

Well, looks like I'll be back in an Audi Avant after years of being away. This past weekend was a bit soggy in our part of the country, so the wife and I decided to head down and test drive the base Premium package model. It drove fantastic, and god knows I miss even entry-level Audi interiors. The dealership only had one test mule in stock, but luckily had a Premium Plus model that had already been sold that showed us the Technology package version.

Ended up ordering a black on black prestige model, though it won't land in the states until January.

Great choice! Can't wait to see it. How did you like the engine/trans? Which dealer did you go to (Marin or down to Stevens Creek)?

The car was surprisingly quick. Certainly not fast, but I've been rather spoiled in that department as of late, so my expectations were fairly low. I drove an X5 Diesel a few days ago, and while the low end power was somewhat comparable, the Allroad accelerated pretty quick from speed, as compared to the X5 which lagged heavily. Also, I think the S-Tronic is a thing of beauty compared the the clunky, antiquated transmissions in my Rover and Mercedes.

Just went to Marin. SC is a fair bit away for us, though I'm sure they have some decent stock offerings there.

I didn't see the Piano Black inlays as an option - were you able to actually order those, or is this just a wish list?

I would stick to the B8.5 Allroad due to the superior Quattro AWD system : http://jalopnik.com/audis-high-tech-...-bi-1760502139

The B9 has similar to Haldex based systems with mostly front wheel drive ....

This is due to attempt to drastic cut cost to cover for the VW diesel scandal:
    http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/in...cally-cut-cost

I think at them moment Audi is at It's all time build quality peak and the new models will suffer from saved cost.

No. quattro Ultra is not Haldex or "similar to Haldex." It was in development long before the TDI scandal broke. It's also more complex than Haldex and TorSen, so how would it be a cost-cutting strategy?

Go drive one, and if you can tell me when the car switches from AWD to FWD, then please, don't buy it.

100% agree...not the same as haldex and they would have saved more money keeping things the way it was rather than this insane system. It's for better MPG and that's it, I'm sure you can look it through VAG or if you are that aggressive of a driver to need AWD all the time then the system will adapt to your driving style. I'm happier for MPG as this is a commuter car for me so no complaints from me, granted the B8.5 allroad with e85 is really an enjoyable car to drive.

I register all my cars in VA for smog, tax, business, and you pull some leniency from police about front plates, tint, 5 inch fireballs out the exhaust, and crap like that in CA (not really the fireballs lol). In this case I am saving a few thousand on the overall process in a whole upfront and down the road.

I agree with you on the screen. I can't figure out why Audi (and other manufacturers) have gone to this design on the screen. It looks cheap to me and as though it was an afterthought. This is actually a deal breaker for me and really hope Audi goes back to an in-dash screen by the time I get around to buying a new vehicle.

That's was the very first thing I hated when I drove my first B9. I immediately looked for the button to retract the screen when I got in but was disappointed to find it was fixed. They do this to get the screen closer to the driver's line of vision without rasing the dash. I did get used to It's over the course of having the car but there's so much info available in the instrument cluster I would really really prefer that it be able to retract, or even better not have a center screen at all like the TT. It's genuinely redundant now with the TFT screen in the cluster.

I didn't realize that the new screens couldn't be retracted! That makes it even worse! Ugh. I am just amazed that someone in Audi design didn't object. They just break up the flow and aesthetics of the interior. And Audi isn't the only one doing it.

I tried to find where I posted my little thoughts about it but I can't remember where I posted it. Bottom line there is a lot to like and I think quality has come up so far from the B8 in terms of depth of attention to detail. This generation seems much more Germanic than B8/C6 & 7 generations. A lot of philosophy has returned that initially made me so loyal to the brand. Much less corner cutting on stuff that you usually see from BMW like crappy Honda-type trunk carpet. That's just my taste though, tech is important but more important to me is material choice and ergonomics. A few things bothered me but it feels so premium in the ways important to me. The screen is one painful example of design sensibilities giving way to tech.

It is my understanding that the fixed screens is something that the government is making mandatory. They have to be fixed now. This is what the project manager for the A5 told me a few days ago. I will do some research and see if I can find anything to back this up.

This is what I've been told too. Something to do with the reverse camera being visible within a specified amount of time, mandated by the NHTSA.

"It's not me, it's you". Officially couldn't come to terms with the 2.0 in the B9, even with the bump in power this year and the updated drivetrain. I really wanted to be in another Audi but was so disappointed with their total insouciance to Avant lovers that this, once again, sit's in my driveway in lieu of an Audi (I'm not complaining).

    What's coming out in '19?

I'm placing an order for a 2018 Allroad and am super annoyed at the reduction of options and packages between 2017/2018. They removed the Sports Package so you can no longer get non-ventilated Sport Seats and no more Black Headliner. Changes like that is what drives VW/Audi buyers crazy.
