    Any input?

The second light hits it (ie sun, headlights) it turns opaque.

I just had mine installed this past friday. After having a windshield that looks like it got hit with a sand blaster (previous owner did a lot of highway driving maybe..?) WOW. Having a brand spankin' new windshield is amazing. I literally got a headache during my first drive after installation because it was so clear!

You can spray with glass cleaner or soapy water and scrape it with a razor blade or use 0000 grade steel wool, it won't make it brand new but will get all the crap off that plain washing can't do, similar to clay barring it

Is that dominatrix leather head garment OSHA approved? Clearly that PPE for eye protection is ANSI Z87 rated.

Edit: And...now my post makes absolutely no sense. Reply post intended for removed.

This!!!!This is a old skool detailers trick to get the windshield spotless and looking like new!!Although im not sure the steel wool will do much in your case its still worth a shot.If you can catch a fingernail in those scratches you wount be able to polish it out.

I've tried polishing out windshields in the past and it just isn't worth the effort. If a clay bar doesn't make any significant difference i would just replace the windshield. You will be amazed at what a different outlook on life you will have with a fresh windshield;-) In my area Safelite uses Sekurit glass which is OEM and will replace it for $250.

Word to the wise - check your following distance. Backing off a bit will decrease the sandblasting.

Spike00513, this is not directed at you. This just seems like a good place to mention it.

I have polished out small lines using cerium oxide and a decent power buffer. Agreed, lots of work. Mine was only a single scratch major scratch, however I did cleanup a few smaller marks. Easily four hours of work with large buffer. Super messy job.

Your insurance doesn't cover new windshields? That will easily pass for a new windshield due to safety hazard.

Not saying at all that buying a windshield won't fix it. But...it is worth a clay bar trial before spending money on a new windshield. Not sure what others are seeing, but he isn't talking about that one larger scratch or the dirty streaks left by his wipers (which seems need replacing BTW). I am looking at what is boxed in red. And more throughout the windshield, yet not as visible. That is why people clay bar their windshield to begin with. I'll be doing mine before winter hits. If he blasts the heat on his front windshield, it goes away. Unless I totally missed it.

Problem is when you drive into the sunlight and it glares off all the tiny pits in the glass. I think that can be cleaned up a good chunk but won't clear it away.

I spotted one he deleted. Seems he researched this quite intensively and was just asling for suggestions. Pretty sure he already has a plan in mind, and wanted opinions on the matter along with what brand to go with due to pros and cons of each brand.

My opinion still stands. 1-3 hrs of work and $20 of supplies is well worth the gamble before spending money on a replacement. And who knows the quality of work that will be performed once he takes that plunge. I personallly don't like Safelite and they replaced mine couple years back. Replaced my mother's couple years back (I think) and she was disgusted by how they put the panels back together. Think she even went back to have them correct it. Next time, using a reputable shop my friend is taking over from his pops. And will use whatever glass he suggests (also a modder who fab welded my old smic. built a sweet mini chopper too).

Take a look at Larry@AMMO NYC on YouTube. He has some good glass cleaning videos. I use the razor blade technique a couple times a year with good results but it won't repair the damage you are seeing. Neither will a clay bar. For that you need extensive compounding but for the effort and cost of new glass, just replace it. If you do replace it, don't use anything other than Saint-Gobain Sekurit glass or you will be disappointed.

Should it? They said it's wear-and-tear. And that even in the case of chips/cracks, you still pay out of pocket because it costs less than the deductible.

Deductibles should not be needed when replacing a windshield, at least not with my insurance. Its a safety thing and most insurances will replace it as long as you have comprehensive coverage and the glass can be replaced with a company in their network.

Check your coverage to see if it has glass repair included in your comprehensive. I did at the time (car is too old to treat like a unicorn's droppings, and now just have collision) and paid nothing. Reason for my repair was for a chip that grew to a crack (held off to long on filling). During that time also had towing covered under my plan, but am a AAA+ Gold member.

To state the obvious, last thing insurance companies want to do is come out their pockets. Just be sure he isn't taking advantage of you and is correct in his assessment. Look into your coverage yourself.

Some. I pay a $100 deductible for a brand new windshield, installed.

I agree it will clean up. My experience is that using a buffing wheel and cerium oxide works, but it takes a while and is pretty messy. Pretty much the polish gets everywhere. That said, if you have a few hours, I would go for it.

    This varies by state.
