    Stage 2 and up clutch

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

Having noticed we've been exploring and giving out a lot of good info on the Stage 2 and up front, figured it might be a good idea to have a similar thread based on clutch and driveline upgrades. No need to clutter other threads.

Has anyone that's not DSG found the limits of their stock clutch?

    What did you upgrade to?

My clutch heats up and starts slipping if I'm driving hard with my stage 2 S5. I looked into a clutch a while back and was leaning towards the JHM stage 4. But I'm interested in what others have to say.

I have the JHM 3R and singlemass steel flywheel along with a USP slave line. It's perfect, and takes full dual pulley power abuse, borderline battery.

My stock clutch would overheat and slip with stage 1. When I went to stage 2 it would slip with aggressive street driving. I recently upgraded to a JHM stage 4 clutch and lightweight flywheel as well as a USP stainless braided slave line. It's been great so far. I just did my first HPDE and it didn't slip once. On the street I knit ice a few differences from stock. The lightweight flywheel is slightly chattier, but with the windows up its unnoticeable. There is a very slight increase in NVH, but it's not much. The pedal is slightly firmer, but in no way bad at all. Pedal travel is the same as stock.
I would absolutely recommend this setup. If you track the car you will be very happy. I don't daily drive the car, so I can't comment on how it acts in stop and go traffic.
I hope this helps your decision.

How is it driveability wise for daily driving?

The limit is unknown since we haven't been able to push the engine far enough...according to Audi it should have broke at stage 1

That said, I am also curious on drivability. My previous cars had a 'stage 3 or 4' clutch and needless to say my left leg felt massive, especially with stop and go traffic

It seems so far for the 6spd the oem clutch is weak

    Yes times infinity!

I hate what they did with the entire clutch system altogether. I'm told '13 and up the clutch may have been improved somehow.

I started noticing the stock clutch slipping on stock ECU just after I bought it at ~27k miles

By 36k it was at the shop getting new clutch and flywheel due to pedal not coming back out after shifting sometimes, and other weird pedal behavior.

I refused to put OEM parts back in and went JHM Stage 3 with LWFW.

So how is it, driveability wise, for tooling around town, commuting back and forth from work, taking the kids to daycare, etc.?

I try my damndest to get into a stoplight drag race with some high-school kid in an sti on a daily basis, but sadly, the majority of my driving is of the tooling around variety. When I upgrade my clutch and flywheel, I don't want to ruin 90% of my drives for the sake of the other 10, but I'd love to make every drive more enjoyable. The stock clutch feels like it could add a lot of sportiness without sacrificing driveability at all, and the stock flywheel could definitely lean up a bit (I always have to consciously pause for a beat before engaging the clutch to let the revs drop enough to match on the 1-2 upshift), so I'm curious to hear from people who have actually upgraded their clutch and flywheel on cars that serve daily duty.

Well said ^ and I have the same questions while at the same time wanting to pursue as much power as reliably possible.

I actually remarked after install that it felt better than oem. Feel free to read my full review. I was more impressed with the LWFW than I thought I would be. Very helpful with that 1-2 shift Wait time.
