    Dropped Valve..motor rebuild or new motor?

    Wanted to ask the group their thoughts and experience on this.

    The motor dropped a valve on #4 and my tech and I are wondering if it might be cheaper to start with a "newer" motor, or perhaps a newer generation of 2.0t from other similar layouts (rear drive layout, Quattro).

    I'm willing to invest in this 07 Titanium and of course lottery dreams would have a 5pot going into it.

    However realistically I'm looking to source a similar 2.0t for cost reasons, and if cheaper just use original motor with improved and better parts. I would like to Stage 2 it but that's the max.

    So any suggestions would be welcome while "black betty" awaits an assessment from the shop. It's primarily a BMW shop with experience with swaps and other performance modifications. They have some Audi experience, but since I know a few people there, they are giving me a break on labor.

    Buy a used motor and call it a day. You can then part out the useable parts of the old motor and recoup some money.

    It would be good to know the extent of the damage so that we can answer the question better. Can you get away with a head rebuild or do you need to do bottom end work as well if there was cylinder and rod damage. The rabbit hole is deep, especially if you are talking about beyond stock modifications.

    @jbain2
    Bottom end work maybe needed from what they have seen so far. Minimal, so not a complete overhaul. Crank seems in good shape along with rods.

    @aluthman
    Saw your motor for sale and wondered if it might do. I'm fairly new with engine codes and what will work and what won't.

    Any tips?

    My engine is from an '07 also and would work just fine.

    A place between here and there

    Block will need a rebuild, and at that point why not add forged rods? And forged pistons? And bigger turbo? And...see where this can go?

    If all you want is a stage 2 pick up a used motor and call it a day. If not, it would be a waste rebuilding it if not chasing power.

    Buy Adams motor. The engine that he has for sale belonged to another member that took care of maintenance. Never heard of him beating up on his car. @ 70k miles its not even broken in yet
