    RNS-e trouble shooting question

    I recently upgraded from Symphony 2+ to a RNS-e unit. Installation went very smooth and unit functions great however I noticed that when all power is off (key off and out) I can still turn on the unit and despite turning the unit off l, I can hear a very faint hum from all the speakers with my ear up next to them. I noticed it when washing the car and wiping out the door sills.

    Is this normal? My primary concern is that I will come out to a dead battery one day. I already had to charge my battery once after about 30 min of setting up all the menus with the car off (my fault)

    : The fan running and the hiss through the speakers is normal behaviour.

    The easiest checks for a correctly wired harness are:
    - does the RNS-E screen blank when you turn the ignition off;
    - does the illumination come on when you turn the sidelights on.
    If both these happen then there's a pretty high probability that the harness you have is OK.

    The RNS-E does NOT turn off when you turn the ignition off, that just blanks the screen and disables the controls (except the on/off button).

    The RNS-E only actually turns off when the first of these happens:
    - you lock the car;
    - 30 minutes after you turned off the ignition.

    Until then the fan can run, and the speakers will hiss (as the amp is still turned on).

    No not normal, you need to make sure the switched 12V and non-switched 12V are correct.

    Thanks for the reply, found another thread on the sudject but no definitive closure. Sat in my car for 10 minutes and the unit did completely power down. Opening the door does seem to wake the unit and very low speaker hum returns. At least I know it wont drain me and predictably powers down as mentioned.

    As I think about it more, the Symphony 2+ unit had a slight hum as well when on but volume off. VCDS sporadically popped up with open circuit (not grounded). I probably should check all grounds points as the RSN-e does amplify better than the symph unit. Bluetooth is now audible and beyond to loud.

    RNS-E stays on for 30 minutes after the key is out, in a sort of standby mode. In this mode I believe it keeps the rear amp powered on but I'm not certain (hence the hiss).

    That is normal behavior.

    However, did you swap the K-Line wire and bose wires? You need to do that swapping from S2+ to RNS-E.

    Yup i had a friend swapped it for me. Recoded the unit to the car...works great

    I did swap those wires. The sounds does sound like the amp with some mixing of the DVD drive booting. The gentle hiss is not an issue as my car is far from quiet while driving, always have either bluetooth phone or radio / music on. Was primarily concerned for possible battery draining but I confirmed the shut down but sitting in the car for some time. Seemed closer to 10 minutes.

    Everything is recoded via vagcom/VCDS as well. The only pain is finding a small enough SD card (max 256mb per manual but heard 1 gig can work if not too many songs.)

    Yea maybe it's 10 minutes. I know I've never bothered to sit there and find out, haha. I believe 2gb cards can work. The main requirement is it CANNOT be an HCSD card. The software can't deal with the HCSD format and its huge address space. I have a 2gb card on my desk that I've been meaning to try for a year or so. But I also had a 1gb card that worked fine. It was so slow it slowed down my whole system though so I ended up removing it and just using my tune2air for Bluetooth.
