    Exhaust Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi All,

I have my AWE touring exhaust inbound this week. My newbie questions-

    1. Time for install. I have a local Independent shop near me with an audi certified Master Tech that is going to do the work. I would like to have a ballpark estimate of how much billable time it should take for a competent tech.

    2. I know the AWE exhaust includes downpipes but the stock catalytic converters remain in tact higher up the exhaust chain right? I have seen some debate about what to call this exhaust is a Catback or not?

    Thanks

Having mine installed now, quoted 1-2hrs but will confirm once completed.

Yes. I've heard catback as well.

I'm not sure what the debate would be, that is the definition of a cat back exhaust.

I would say 2-3 hours, based on the rates here in CA, and what I've paid in the past.

    Cat back, definitely not downpipes

I'm wondering if the confusion is with AWE claiming the system comes with "downpipes"? If that's true, aren't the factory cats located in the downpipes? If they are, then that would mean the AWE system is replacing the factory cats (therefore not a cat-back system). But I doubt the system includes cats. It sounds like they need to revise their system description to say it includes mid-pipes, not downpipes (?).

Compare AWE's description to the APR downpipe kit, and I can see how it's confusing because APR seems to state they moved the factory cats from the downpipe to the midpipe. Just a thought. Or am I off base?

I had the AWE touring installed on my A7 a month ago. I would say you should be charged around three hours of time. I had a independent shop owner install mine and the car was on the rack around four hours but he was called away by other techs and phone answering numerous times. Final bill was $220 but he may have charged me less because I always pay him cash for work.

The 3.0L has a short header that goes into a catalytic converter section and the AWE exhaust bolts onto that. It is a cat back system. Here's a shot of what I had installed.

Have a questions.. I should be taking delivery of my S6 any day now, at least I hope. I made the mistake and did not order the sport exhaust and am kicking myself. Will I be able to still delete the resonators and add an x pipe on a stock exhaust system?

Yes, though the sports exhaust with the resonator delete sound pretty good.

I just had the touring installed last week. It took them about 2-3 hours to get it all aligned and right. Love the sound, really not impressed with the looks. I think it is a bit cheesy you can see the inner muffler pipe once the tips are on. It makes it obvious looking at the back of the car that the tips are a separate part. Yah we all know they are, just looks like shit on an 90k car.

I am loving it. The tone and volume fit the car nicely. I have found myself driving in S a lot more just to hear the downshifts though. I think I will adjust the tips to stick out a bit more this weekend. I think this post best describes my impressions. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=537184 Looking forward to hearing your impressions.

Will it still make a noticable difference on the stock exhaust?

Installed today. In a word, it is awesome! I really think it is perfect all the way around. Fit and finish are spot on. The mechanics loved the Blow Pops btw.

Sound (it has been reviewed accurately so many times, I am not going to bother with another full review.)

Here are a few quick thoughts from somebody with fresh eyes.

    1. Cold start sounds menacing...as it should

    2. Warm idle, near silent

    3. Cruising out of my neighborhood does not get me a single dirty look. My wife drove it with the windows up and did not notice the new exhaust (nor did I tell her).

    4. Windows up and cruising...no drone and silent

    5. Hammer the throttle and your hear the voice of god.

    6. The tone of this exhaust is spot on. It has a supercar type presence. I have owned a full milltek exhaust on my old S4, Supersprint Race exhaust including stepped headers on my older ///M Car and many other configurations from other brands. I have to say that this exhaust note/tone is my favorite so far. Not too raspy, Not to quiet...all around it is an excellent fit for an upscale S6.

Bottom line is you can modulate how much exhaust you hear by simply modulating your right foot. I think it is what the car should have had from the factory.

    Cheers.
