    Hey guys I have a tip 1.8t quattro and I'm very serious on doing a budget transmission swap. I have access to my school car shop (yes im in highschool and I'm 17) so Ill be looked over by a mechanic and will have lots of tools. The only thing is I dont want to spend a lot so I need to temperarly cut corners where I can. Also is the 6spd swap harder than the 5spd? I head that the 5 speed tip uses the same rear diff as the 6mt 01e? I also heard about a problem with the speedometer because the 6mt uses a different way of measuring speed or something? I've done a fair bit of research but of course some questions wont be answered. So here are some questions;

    1. Will I have to swap my flywheel to fit the bearing (forget the right name of it), because I know the auto crankshaft or something is 2mm longer than the manual. I also heard of people just shaving it doen which I might do for time and money.

    2. To not throw codes what am I to reflash in terms of tcu ecu and cluster? Do I NEED to reflash all 3? I just need it to pass my emissions test dont really care bout much else.

    3. Not really a question but if you've done this swap, do you have any words of wisdom or something that you wish you knew before you did it?

    Thanks guys I really apreciate it and how long (assuming I have all the parts) would this take?

    depends what year your car is, 2002s take the vehicle speed off the driverside axle stub so swapping to a 5spd m/t or B6 3.0 01e would be easiest, to put an 02x in your car in terms of littlest work required starting with 03-05 car would be best, you need to look up the final drive of the trans you want to put in and compare with your tip, that will tell you if you need to swap rear diff, I don't have this off the top of my head. 2002 ecus cannot from what I've seen be coded to 6m/t only 03-05 can be.

    You need to recode your abs, ecu and cluster and you may possibly have to change the downpipe, being a tip I'm sure your stock downpipe will fit it just won't bolt onto the trans bracket.

    In terms of time, I'd wager 15ish labour hours to do the swap, if you're quick you can have trans out with clutch and flywheel installed and reinstall the trans in about 8 hrs or less then the rest for pedals, vcds work and loose ends, add a few more hours if you have to swap out the rear diff.

    I Have a 2002 that the previous owner had swapped the tip out for a 5 spd. manual. There were two issues that I had to deal with when I got the car running( I bought the car with a broken timing belt). The first was that the engine didn't completely return to idle when shifting and secondly the cruise control didn't work. Fortunately both issues were solved by installing a wire between the clutch switch and a pin on the ECU. If you search for "cruise control doesn't work after 5 spd. manual install" that will take you to a thread that has great instructions on how to install the wire. It sounds difficult to do but it really is not that bad. The most difficult part is getting the pin out of the ECU ( I guess you would call it a bus) you need to find something small enough to release the tab holding the pin into the bus once that is done its just connecting the wire. Once the connections are made and the ECU is reinstalled everything works perfectly. I recently changed the clutch unfortunately I had to do it twice mostly because I'm not very smart as I screwed up the rear main seal installation. The first time I took out transmission it took me about 15hrs change the clutch and reinstall the transmission. but I did it the second time it was done in 10 hrs. Saved 1/3 of the time by being more familiar with what I was doing. I almost said that I knew what I was doing and that would not be true.
