    Very Specific Clutch Question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 6sp 01e paired with a K04 hybrid and Milltek HFC. I'll be getting more bolt ons and tune soon, but my clutch is going out. My goals are 280 awhp.

I've done a fair amount of research about DMFW vs SMFW, the SAC system and driveability. I raise this question because I can't seem to find any feedback from someone with a DD 6 speed that does hard launches from time to time. It's either someone with 400+ hp that goes to the track, or never hard launches at all on a DD.

The obvious choices seem to be ECS RA4 RS4 kit, JHM B7 RS4 or Valeo HD. The latter I was about to rule out cause I'm hearing that it'll just slip if you try to hard launch it. I'm leaning towards the JHM since its like stock, LWFW and better SAC. I know the DMFW causes less NVH but does it really increase the life of the tranny? Are there any other "stage 2" like options for the o1e ? Hopefully I'll get feedback from someone who launches seldomly and DD.

I have the JMH clutch. To date, after 12 years of driving my B6 and 5 different clutchs...the JHM is the only one that has survived! All the other clutchs failed me. I launch the JHM and it holds.
The amazing part...its a "stock" B7 RS4 clutch disk and pressure plate. I changed the pedal spring to help with the pedal pressure. I highly recommend the JHM clutch. Its tried and tested in my 6 speed B6 Quattro.

Thanx, I read your praises before but didn't think you were launching. Glad to hear that, wanna hear from the RA4 guys too though. Did you get Stage 1 or Stage 3?

I'm interested in this as well. Looking into clutches for my project, but we're at different power levels (hoping 350-400 DD). The jhm kit is first on my list, but also trying to decide if stg 1 will be enough for occasional launches.

KevinC did a conversion to the b7 2.0t flywheel, block spacer, and starter. This allows for 240mm clutch discs & covers from b6s4 and rs4. His thread is on here somewhere.

I would say only the chatter because of the lw smfw. A fluidampr will help a bit.

Stage 1, the JHM representative said he had the stage 1 on his big turbo b7 and done many launches, and its still holding up.

    I drive the ECS RA4 Stage 1 kit (B5 S4).

Launches are fine one a APR K04+ injector setup, no slipping. But is plenty gentle for daily driving.

ECS SMFW is noisy, I don't like it. Would possibly try JHM if there is a next time. I'm used to it now but wouldn't choose it for a DD. Rev matching is nice though.

ECS FW is 12lbs & steel, JHM FW is 9lbs and aluminum. Usually weight is considered a large factor pertaining to FW/gearbox chatter, but I wonder if aluminum would dampen the noise any better (despite lower weight).

BTW I have IMO the best of both worlds: ECS RA4 FW + LUK B7 RS4 clutch kit. Minor modification required, but I can use any clutch kit designed for/around B7 RS4. LUK B7 RS4 clutch kit only costs $144 on Rock Auto...

Would you care to elaborate on this change? I would love to reduce the energy it takes to operate the clutch and never thought of changing the clutch pedal return spring. Is this an OE spring or did you just match it up to a similar spring with less tension?

It's the clutch pedal over-center spring. At least on the B5, if you drive a 1.8T you can get the spring from a B5 S4. I believe it's similar with the B6, where you could use the spring from a S4 or B7 RS4.

Fluidampnr front crank pulleys are very well reviewed for eliminating or reducing chatter associated with LWFW. Best answer to a lighter flywheel in my opinion.
