Engine is out of car what else could I check or change ? 2002 A6 2.7

I am having my transmission replaced in my 2002 A6 2.7t. I will be replacing most coolant hoses and oil cooler hose. The mechanic says the turbo was dry inside n seemed to be ok. He did notice oil build up in the intercooler for both sides. What does that mean? I am also changing valve cover gasket. Mechanic says it might be good idea to change the starter since engine is out? Thoughts recommendations ?

    Thanks
    Tom

You could always disassemble the starter, clean it, check the brushes, or just have it tested. Unless it's been problematic, I wouldn't dig into it much.

Spider-hose may be cracked and broken if it's OEM. I'd rebuild it with appropriate hoses vs buying an OEM replacement.

Valve cover gaskets are known problems, so that's a good idea. Same with cam-plugs, half-moons, etc.

Inspect the timing chain pads while you have the valve covers off and replace if necessary.

Timing belt is a piece of cake at that point too. Hard not to give that a thought as well.

Thanks for follow up. I replaced timing belt, water pump, at 125k miles. It has 160k miles now. Should be ok. Valve cover gasket leaking like crazy on both sides! Explains why I had to add oil all the time. Oil was all over the engine!
