Crank and cam timing marks not lining up

My crank pulley timing mark was off a few years ago when I got the car with a new timing belt. I noticed it when I did my chain tensioner. Now I did my timing belt. Everything lines up where it was, engine spins freely but, the crank not lining up bugs me. Here's how it looks like. I wonder is it really off or the pulley and cover are off? I did not see any marks on the crank sprocket to check timing with it.

It's about 1CM behind the mark.

I don't see how that could possibly be right... your saying it was this way before removing the timing belt?

It's possible to be 1 maybe 2 teeth out on the belt and not make valve to piston contact.

Pull #1 spark plug, use something long that won't damage the piston head, put it in the hole and slowly rotate. Essentially manually locating #1 TDC and see where the mark is then.

Oke so this definitely warrants more investigation. The first timing belt was done at audi. That's exactly how it looked like two years ago and how it looked like before I did my belt.

I'm going to check the TDC through the plug hole. Also I found there is a flywheel mark.

There's also a belt teeth count guide on a TT forum

Crank gear seems to be half a tooth off. Definitely not one off. But triple counting belt nubs I get exactly 68. I'm happy.

Ok so you've verified timing on the belt, assuming the cam mark is also dead aligned. I believe it's possible to put the front crank pulley 90* out due to the two holes and only one nub on the crank gear. Is it possible that's the case?

Crank and cam timing marks not lining up

No it is not possible. The nub is between 2 of the holes the from pulley would not sit flush and the deep belt wound fly off.

On that note 1.8T timing belts have always been weird .With the cam gear mark being in the center of a tooth or just before or after.Lower cover will have a detent in it no visible mark just a detent in the cover tends to be more to the left side.

If your really sure the timing is off,the only thing I've e we seen is the woodruff key on the crank gear cracks causing it to spin, but unless your have a giant turbo on it or rev the car over 8500rpms I bout that's the case.Only thing to check is to replace the lower timing gear bolt and inspect the gear if you think there is a issue.

It's all good. Drove all day, no codes. Moving it a tooth would have put it way further off.
