My Experience with an FEQ axle, DO NOT BUY!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I wanted to share my experience on here about an FEQ axle I purchased. I had a rip in my original CV boot on the drivetrain side of my front left axle which eventually caused it to fail (alot of clicking/some wobbling at high speeds). I knew that the CV axle was definitely the culprit (tires were good, had a recent alignment, wheel bearings are new), so I went ahead an ordered an FEQ replacement. It was the best deal I could find for my car, a 3.0 with quattro.

I removed the old axle, which isn't the easiest job but do-able, and my old one was shot. Lots of play and the boot was ripped really bad. I'm sure it had been slinging grease for thousands of miles. After removing the old one I took the FEQ unit out of the box and noticed the cap on the drivetrain side was zip-tied down. I thought it was weird but proceeded.

They include black grease which I filled the drivetrain side boot with, but the boot wouldn't remain closed. After removing the zip-tie, the cap on the end was also falling off. Luckily I always have zip-ties in my tool box so I zipped down the boot side and the cap by going through the hole where the bolts are supposed to go.

I removed the bolts that came with the kit to begin re-installation but they were slightly shorter than the OEM ones and were 8mm hex heads vs. 10mm 12-points. I read that the old OEM ones were single use so I re-attached everything with what came with the kit.

It was a huge pain trying to get all the holes to line up properly (remember I had to zip tie everything to keep it from falling apart). I was finally able to attach the bolts after fangling for about an hour, and torqued to spec according to the Bentley manual.

At this point I've worked on the car for over 2 hours in my driveway and felt good, the job is done right? Nope!

I turned the car on and immediately felt vibration on the driver's side that wasn't there before. Once I got it on the road and up to speed the entire thing felt extremely wobbly, so much so that I called a tow truck home.

The axle has over an inch of play if you pull it towards the spindle end. These things are crap.

I've ordered a new remanufactured OEM axle from Marty at Raxles.com, cool guy and they come with a lifetime warranty and all OEM replacement bolts/pieces. My local shop (NGP racing) highly recommended him for the replacements as he has made axles for their race vehicles and they have never had issues. He knows his stuff, and I'll see how good the axle is when it comes in next week.

The whole experience was frustrating, now I have to do the job twice, and my car is out of commission in the meantime. Luckily I have an old truck as a backup. I wanted to warn you guys not to go with FEQ, ever! I called the website I ordered them from for a return, which they accepted, but I have to pay return shipping. They even told me that they've had issues with FEQ as well.

FEQ is Chinese made and extremely poor quality. You can go cheap on some items but something as critical as an axle isn't one of them. I learned my lesson the hard way and wanted to give you guys a heads up so you don't have to go through the same experience.

Wow, that's nuts. I used one from AAP to hold me over. It at least had metal clamps, and I didn't have to put it together. Seriously, wth. Those eight interior bolts are not single use. The axle bolt (17mm hex) is.

I wouldn't go with anything except Raxles.Sure it cost more but sometimes you get what you pay for.

I've used FEQ axles on my B7 before with no issues. Sorry you had a horrible experience. Oddly enough, for my C5, guys are recommending Autozone Duralasts, so imma give that a whirl this weekend.

I called Marty a while back to get a set.
He is a super cool guy and great to talk to.

Only issue was I'm in Canada and it was too much trouble shipping it ere and the core back.
I really hope he figures out a cost effective way to take advantage of the Canadian market.

There's gotta be a company in Canada that rebuilds axles. Just a matter of finding them

I'd rebuild them if I could find non-chinese joints for less than the price of a whole OEM axle, it's not a big deal.

I had a similar result using a (forget brand now, not FEQ) chinese axle on my golf 4. Vibrated like crazyyyy.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe you got a bum axle? I was debating between FEQ vs Raxles but the money wasn't available. It's been over 6 months and 5k miles w/ FEQ. Made a little noise first couple days but all good so far.

Requires more work, but buying the joint alone you can use original hollow axle shafts.

I have noticed the notorious 75-80mph this past month but I'm running on tires that are due for replacement. I'll be able to rule out tires whenever I get a new set.

I have never had to replace the inners. On my B5 I did go through a pair of outers. My preference was to keep my original axles and just change the outer joint. Cost wise, its was more expensive to buy a good quality outer than a complete reman (non Raxels) but I never had to worry about how well it would hold up and if I was going to get odd vibrations.

If I need a new axle, Raxles sounds to be the best rout. When I did my six speed swap, my alternative was to pick up a full used shafts out of a newer low millage salvage yard car. At 90,000 miles the inners are perfect. The outers were good with the exception that the boots were torn from being pulled.

It turned out my five speed axles are the same PN as the six speed units so I put them to the side as spares.

Raxles are def a nice! I used those on my C5 and found a GKN axle for my B6 on eBay.

Don't see why the GKN brand axle wouldn't be just as good as the Genuine Audi axle since the joints are GKN built. But the Raxles warranty kinda makes it a moot point I guess, either way.

Yeah GKN/Loeb axles are the OE manufacturer from what I read. I did try to find those first but everywhere I looked had them on backorder. Plus, Marty was highly recommended by my trusted Audi shop.

I just order used OEM ones on ebay. Never caused me an issue this route, latest one couple years in and picked up for $55 shipped.

I have a 3.0 6 speed with quattro, so the axle that fits (8E0 407 271 AB) is somewhat harder to find. Trust me, ebay is one of the first places I go to find used parts.
