How big of a deal IS td1?

So what are my real problems if I get flagged? It seems like everything's fine except they bill me some stupid 400 dollars to flash me back to stock, saving me from the horrors of my tune.

Um, no, that's not the issue. I suggest doing some research.

With a tune-induced TD1, any major powertrain warranty issues/claims are likely to be denied.

Also flashing to stock and back shouldn't be more than an hour of labor or so. There are some APR/GIAC dealers that even do it for free.

Hayden- I recently read up posts of AoA denying pretty much every claim based on TD1. Of course it technically means only powertrain warranty fucked, but quite a few people posted about their claims denied under TD1 even though it was not powertrain related. The M-M law protects us, yes but I was given some very deep education about it.

To add to this. The M-M law from everything I have read does not really give us protection! When they state after market parts it is referring to non OEM parts. For instance if your fuel pump went out and you went to and Independent shop and they replaced it with a non Audi fuel pump, that is what the M-M law was designed to protect, not aftermarket parts how we think of them.

The bottom line is that if you are going to modify your car you need to know that a TD1 is a real possibility. With that said I think having a strong relationship with your service advisor is very very important. I think it is also very important to do some research on the platform you intend on modifying. For instance the 4.0T seems to be a very reliable platform which is great! Now if you had a BMW 335 a while back with all of their fuel pump issues etc. you could be begging to get flagged cause a lot of those cars were in the shop frequently regardless of mods.

Can you provide any specific examples?

There's no way Audi can reasonably deny a failed MMI, or blown strut etc because of an engine tune. I could see a moron service advisor saying this but not AoA...

Sport differential could be denied under TD1.

DSG sensor failure, turbo oil or coolant leak could also fall under TD1.

Right, but those are all part of the powertrain/drivetrain.

From their point of view you messing with the systems electronics and hardware would cause almost every bit of the car to be denied for repair.

MMI - No coverage due to messing with cars electrical system
Suspension - No coverage due to increased stress on components
Window motor - No coverage due to messing with electrical system
Bad seat stitching - No coverage due to increased stress on material due to acceleration

You get the point. If Audi decide to go this route instead of fixining legitimate issues not caused by the tune then this will be my first and last Audi.

True, but not caused necessarily by the ECU/TCU tune.

So if they deny a claim, the very best situation is you lose your car for a few days while u argue with them and then they fix it under warranty. Worst case is you lose your car for a few days u argue with them and u STILL pay for the repair.

U just have to roll the dice if a tune is that desirable.

That was me. I don't know yet for sure that the new evap can and N80 fixed my issue since the problem is hard to reproduce once the outdoor temperatures start dropping. My one fuel-up while warm did not cause any stalling issues.

Audi did not cover the evap can nor N80 and my SA said Audi also would not cover the fuel tank if that needed to be replaced. He basically said his hands are tied once TD1 is in the system since he doesn't get to make the call on what AoA chooses to reimburse them for. The fuel tank obviously is an example of a part that an ECU tune should not affect since any issue is likely going to be caused by a defect (unless you run over a boulder or something). Also my oil separator (high pitched whistle noise) was not covered in a previous repair despite the fact there was an official TSB to address the issue.

My opinion is that Dieselgate is causing VAG to bleed and they are now denying all warranty repairs on TD1 flagged cars as a blanked first step to conserve money. In the past this wasn't an issue and I was OK with being TD1 flagged as I'm old-school and have the pay-to-play mentality and find it dishonest to flash back to stock to have Audi fix a drivetrain or powertrain failure caused by the tune.

I remember having a TD1 discussion with my SA with some "what if" questions. I sensed that this particular dealership was "TD1 happy". The SA told me that once a car is coded with a TD1, Audi can and will deny all warranty work. Whaaaaat?!?! I understand their position with mods but to hear this blanket statement was more than a shock. From my experience, Audi seems to be the most mod-unfriendly automobile manufacturer I have come across. I love my S6 but this has completely turned me off to Audi. I understand the pay-to-play rules but Audi seems to be taking their behavior to a new level of Nazi intimidation tactics.
I'm not a big fan of Mercedes but we've always had one in our garage because of my wife (she likes MBs) but they are far more mod friendly than Audi and they don't give me shit about what I do to MY cars! I personally have not had any TD1 issues yet but I really do not appreciate where Audi is going with this. I'm thinking it's time for change on the next go. Life is short and plenty of toys to choose from; that's a good thing!

Welp, so much for my first "free" oil change. It'll cost me 2+ hours on the road (there and back), twice, plus the 2 hours on the road to any decent dealership to get this done. I'll get flashed to stock for warranty work so they don't blame my tune for the squeaky AF passenger seatbelt receptacle... eventually.

I got my first oil change while tuned - no TD1. They're a mod friendly dealership, though.
