Building 06A engine, what should be done while it's apart?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Car is going next week to have the engine pulled and will be rebuilt with a stroker setup and a 6758 efr aiming for 350awhp. I am wondering what all should be swapped while the engine is out. I am doing a press fit timing gear, solid mechanical timing belt setup, all new bolts (most ARP), new belts, oil pump, and water pump. I am wondering if there is anything I am missing.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks

I would freshen any rubber you can get your hands on. Toss all new gaskets in the head, half moonn seal, tensioner gasket,VC gasket.

I would also take this time to clean up and straighten up the engine bay

It's all pretty obvious, but I would get a new oil chain tensioner too.

Are you completely set on the manual timing belt tensioner? If yours is a late AWM (maybe early AWM will work too) you can switch to the new style non-hydraulic Litens tensioner. Better than the old-style hydraulic damper because well, it doesn't have the hydraulic damper to fail. This also makes installation much easier. I put one on the AMB in my B6 a few months back, but it's the same as the AWM.

I am 350whp butt dyno and no need for stroker for this. If you want extra tq and earlier spool, that can all be done with a tune. So this means money to save on a lot of parts, inluding pistons. I run aeb pistons on an awm block. Rods are Brute, but RPM rods (believe this is brand) seem to be the new cheap reliable way to go. S4 guys have been running them ever since the discover better than sliced bread...to Audi heads.

Blauparts has info about it on their site:

I bought the timing belt kit for my B6 from them (and for my B5 as well, but it was 3 years ago before the Litens tensioner update).

These parts can be purchased separately also. I have P/Ns but would have to dig them up.

Don't ask but I currently have 4 sets of pistons; stroker wiseco 82mm, wiseco stock stroke 82mm, stock aeb pistons nib, and je 81.5mm for stock stroke. Also already have the stroker crank but it depends on what the engine looks like on the inside. May go easy route and stuff aeb and forged rods in. The rpm rods look identical too Max's peed rods, which I have as well.

I just want the goods before this deal starts so it's done as quick as possible. Don't want to a miss a thing.

I personally only reused the main caps and oil squirters. Everything else new, including crank journals polished. Reused oil pump chain only because I somehow misplaced brand new one ordered. But a little stretch over the years was the only concern where the new chain tensioner compensated. But everything else replaced. Instead of a hot tank, with short block upside down I put brake fluid down each oil galley. Forgot where it flowed out, but that let me know it was clear.

Every gasket and seal brand new. No need to spend double or more for the same end result. But you are a machinist, and have all at your disposal. So, new parts and basically get it done. Specs needed for building internals is in the Haynes manual. One thing, JE specs are wrong. This was discovered by B6 guys who ended up with piston slap, so I want to say piston to wall clearances were inaccurate. This was for 83mm pistons, but still something you may want to investigate for your overbored ones.

I bought the JE since I got a good deal on them but I would let them go for a smoking deal of $350, if anyone is interested.

When I asked what all should be replaced I was really wondering if there is small things that needed done but is overlooked. Here is what I am doing,

    All new gaskets Elring
    New water pump
    Oil pump, chain, tensioner
    Pistons
    Forged rods
ARP head bolts, crank bolt, cam bolt
    New main bolts
    Press fit crank gear
    Mechanical timing belt tensioner
    RAI timing belt
    New bearings Calico
Supertech exhaust valves, supertech retainers, supertech intake Springs
    New hydro lifters
    All new belts
    Clutch

I am thinking of getting a new oil cooler as well. Really looking for an ie intake cam as well.

I am wanting to go with the stroker setup in case I grow out of the 6758 efr.

I used all new parts. Not a big kit fan. Ordered Gates belt elsewhere and put my own kit together. Of course new parts. And use the OEM wp with plastic impeller or Graf brand. Bad batch of Geba running around claiming motors. As for lifters, those too if building a head. Elring hg and arp head bolts. Also running IE press fit gear. With that gear, no need for arp crank bolt. OEM will do just fine. Or arp with dowel pins.
