    MMI cable & BT question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Sorry for the cross-post but didn't get far in the sponsored forum.

Here's my question. I have an old iPhone 4 and BT works wonderfully as does the phone link though of course navigation through folders is not possible. So I decided to connect the OEM cable in order to charge and be able surf through my music collection. Surfing was fine except no sound. So I disabled BT and presto, music and navigation.

However, I presume that disabling BT now makes my iPhone no longer linked to the MMI for calls or does the cable provide that interface. I haven't tested it yet and mostly post this in case someone else didn't realize (the obvious?) of not being able to run BT and cable in parallel.

Will my phone still send and receive calls via the cable and MMI sans BT?

I've got no idea regarding the question on BT, but have you tried to maybe just change the BT settings instead of turning it off entirely?

On your phone go into Settings, BT, then there should be settings in there where you can modify what audio is active for a specific BT connection. Uncheck Media Audio and leave everything else checked, then test it out and see if that works?

Thanx for your reply HazeMyth. Alas I don't have any settings under BT other than ON or OFF (and of course what devices I'm pairing with). Then again this is an iPhone 4 so it may not have those options. What iPhone do you have?

I refuse to use Apple products. I've got an HTC 10. Before that it was an HTC One M8. For Android, the audio settings are specific to the bluetooth device you're connecting with. I can have different audio settings for various bluetooth devices.

My buddy has connected his iPhone to my car before, and he was able to change the audio settings, but I don't recall which iPhone he had.

Thanx, could be just that I have an old iPhone 4 which doesn't have those settings. I'll test more today or tomorrow and see whether the cable supplants BT when I disconnect BT via the cable.

PS Reason I have a 4 and not a 4S or later is I don't do Siri or similar. I have enough folks tracking me (location services disabled...) and don't need Google et al to remind I'm out of toilet paper :)

OK did some tests with BT off and cable connected.

    1) Music and nav fine

    2) Incoming phone call. Music mutes, ring heard in car but unable to pick up via MMI or controls (automatic phone linkage is active as per the display).

I tried to go through all the configuration commands on the MMI but none pertained to this and my phone doesn't have individual BT source settings.

So I guess I can either have BT and phone access but no charging (not an issue) or navigation of music folders. Or disable BT and dive into the glove box to retrieve the phone in case of a call. Unless anyone has any other ideas as to how to circumvent this (other than getting an Android, a new phone or get an old ipod to just have music :) )

Have you looked at the Tune2Air? It provides the glove box connection over Bluetooth and would be worth giving a shot. (Apparently now re-branded as the Bovee ViseeO WMA1000)

what car is this for? i see a 2015 RS5 that with nav should have built in bluetooth streaming. no need for it to be plugged in so why are you? As for the Tune2air, the WMA3000A is the new version and comes with a built in cable. I just got mine yesterday for my 2009 S5 and it works amazingly

Read his post. He wants to navigate the music folders, which can't be done on bluetooth.

I know the tune2air would work and I'm connected to both bluetooth sources one for call one for media on my android, I can play around with my wife's iphone to see if the same can be accomplished. the tune2air does allow browsing of content as desired and such on the iPhone.

In my case, I just got used to using the center seek instead of the one on the wheel. It did bother me at first that certain media sources didn't work with the wheel, but once you're used to it, it's not so bad.

What center seek? The little volume wheel that you can skip forward or back on the console?

On the 2015, you can't have both BT and cable connection at the same time as I mentioned above.

So if I understand correctly, you connect tune2air to the AMI cable, leave your BT on, select Media on the MMI and you will be able to navigate your song list? I know I can do that already, what won't happen is that you won't get any music. Perhaps this is because of the MMI firmware on the 2015s. Thoughts?

    Thanx for your replies

Yeah, that's the center seek I'm referring to. I can't speak to the Tune2Air. I've never used it, only read about it a little bit.

The center seek with BT on my 2015 either mutes/stops the music, increases/decreases the volume or seeks forward/reverse. That's all you can do on it, but no navigating a playlist or folder

I've never heard of BT and AMI not working in parallel. You need BT to have phone integration, otherwise you can't make or receive calls through the MMI and you don't get the address book integration. My guess is you have the Bluetooth Audio Player enabled in the MMI and so your phone is routing the audio through Bluetooth, even if you are connected by cable. If you change the source to Bluetooth in Media, do you get audio? You may have to turn up the volume as the levels are not consistent across all sources. There are two BT profiles when it comes to audio. There is BT Hands Free, which is what the phone integration uses and then there is BT A2DP which is audio streaming over BT for media apps on your phone. The latter can be turned on/off in the MMI under the BT settings. The option is called Bluetooth Audio Player.

I don't use AMI anymore. I do everything over BT, but I used to have my old iPod permanently connected in the glove box while my phone was connected via Bluetooth. I'm sure the fact that you have an iPhone 4, which I believe is stuck on iOS 7 or something like that, that some of the audio routing is not as flexible as on new versions, but try turning off the Bluetooth Audio Player option in the MMI settings and see if that makes any difference.

As for your complaints about new iPhones, all those things can be turned off. If you don't want to use Siri, then turn it off, same goes for location history etc.

Well after speaking with AoA they agreed that BT and AMI do NOT work in parallel. I don't have a data plan so if I disable Siri and all the location etc. stuff I'm left with... an iPhone 4 :)

As I stated above, if I connect the cable and leave BT on, I get navigation of play lists but no sound. HOWEVER I did not CRANK the volume up to max but simply turned the sound up some but never got any music. I will however go and try this again. Hassle will be if I get a call it will blast the windows out no doubt. I will try and see where there are any settings to differentiate between hands free and A2DP which I didn't find in my scan through the various options.

Also I don't what changes were made between 2013 and 2015 in the MMI firmware so what might have worked then may no longer work now as per AoA.

Thanx for taking the time, I'll go test some more and report back

OK after a quick perusal of the settings I disabled BT Audio and now things work. Thanx SuperSwiss!

I didn't check nav but I assume it works with the AMI cable though I found the quality of the phone audio not as good, but could be I was in the garage calling from the home phone with the base unit 100 yards away.

    Again thanx for that Superswiss!
