    New Q5/SQ5 Quarter-Mile Record 11.95 @ 113.61 (EPL)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Last night I had a chance to get out to Sacramento Raceway and run a few passes in some terrific October DAs (+300). When I got there the place was packed because it was Corvette night. When I pulled into line, I randomly ran into the guys from JHM Motorsports who were there to run some of their shop cars. We had 30 minutes to kill before we could even do a dial-in run so we chopped it up. Sup fellas! I got to the strip with ¼ tank of gas and 41 PSI in my tires.

When I finally did my dial in, I ran an 11.999 @ 113.64. My first time under 12 which was great! However it could have been better because I had a fuel shortage. On the second pass I ran a 12.005 @ 114.11. A faster trap speed, but slower ET due again to a fuel shortage I’ll get into in a second.

The record pass was right before they closed at 9:30pm. The DA was right around +300. Because of the fuel shortage issues at the top of the RPM band, I decided to manually shift earlier, around 6500 in 3rd and 4th, and it ran a lot better. Not perfectly, but better than the first two runs. The result was the fastest ET and the slowest trap speed 11.950 @ 113.61 of the night. I took an in cabin video and posted it to YouTube (below). I know the slip is hard to read, so here are the splits:

    60ft: 1.772
    330ft: 4.986
    660ft: 7.660
    1/8 mph: 92.05
    1000ft: 9.976

The fuel shortage issue is the same one the E85-blend guys on the S4 board are facing. E85 requires 50% more fuel volume compared to normal gas because it isn’t as efficient. The higher the RPM and gear, the higher the fuel requirement. Above 6500 RPM I can feel the car “top out”, and basically cruise instead of accelerate. The great news is the S4 guys have found a solution in the form of an inline booster which increases the fuel volume. This is fantastic because it will allow me to shift between 6900-7200, and run more E85, and less crappy California 91. The EPL tune is ready to provide the power; I just need to upgrade my hardware to allow it to do its thing.

In addition to the 11.95, I also ran a 3.83 0-60 (VBox timed). I took a picture of the VBox app results since it had some other interesting numbers.

Special thanks to Tony and Chris at EPL for working with me on the tune. We’re going to start working on more stuff for you guys, so stay tuned for even faster times.

    Happy boost season!

Yeah thanks guys this thing pulls hard off the line. Some of my launches are a full 1.0 G-force of push back into my seat, as recorded by the VBox.

nsantos - we're definitely the heavy weight club. It's the equivalent of the S4 guys packing their cars full of their buddies, and running 11s. Haha!

Thanks man! Yeah I hooked up with EPL in April. I went to the track for the first time in June and ran a 12.45. Over the next 3-4 months we've worked on the tune, and the times have dropped consistently since then: 12.45, 12.31, 12.29, 12.19, 12.00, 11.95. During that 3-4 months, there was only one time when I went to the strip and I didn't set a new PR. And that trip was just as helpful as the others because that's when I learned that I needed to blend some gas with the E85.

Now that I think about it, I should probably ask Sacramento Raceway if they have a season pass.

Not yet. Slammed with work, I'm just hoping I'll have the AMS cooler and test pipes on by Nov.

Trying to line up the 189mm pulley right now. Maybe both can go on this month.

I could be wrong, but from reading the thread here (SQ5-0-60-amp-1-4-Mile-Times), it seems the SQ5 needs an additional gear change to reach the 1320, hence possibly slowing it down.

I'm pretty sure both the Q5 and SQ5 need that last shift when Stage2+ (108+ trap speeds). All current info shows the Q5 to have 3.204:1 final drive and the SQ5 3.076:1. There seems to be some info showing that the SQ may have had the 3.204 gearing in '14, and there were some early, wrong typos showing 3.760:1, but it's all been tough to verify.

In any case, If you watch colby's Q5 run, he's well into 5th at ~5800 rpm by the end of the run so there was no way to stretch 4th out. My "thinking out loud" on the SQ5's taller gearing was that it might be enough to eek out 4th to the traps, but gary simpson said in the thread u reference that he still needed to shift ~25' from the end.

Bottom line seems to be, even with the supposed gearing advantage of the Q5 over the SQ5, since they both need that last 4th-->5th there's no real advantage there for either. I am curious if similarly tuned Q5 and SQ5 show a better 60' time for the Q5, but it seems like high 1.7s, low 1.8s is possible on both. I dunno 3.076/3.204 is only3-4% difference so it may never make as big a difference as track conditions, driver, etc

I think with a TCU tune both the Q5 and SQ5 could make it in 4th gear. The TCU tune could adjust the redline in "S" mode to 6900 or even 7200 rpms. That would allow us to stay in our gears a little longer. Gary's SQ5 was shifting from 1-2 and 2-3 at 6500 rpms, and he was missing the finish line by just 25 feet. With a TCU tune, those shifts could all happen at 6900 rpms, and SQ5s would easily make it in 4th gear. The Q5s might need to go with a 7200 rpm TCU tune in order to finish in 4th gear.

Because the Q5 has a higher final gear ratio, it produces more torque, and should have better 60ft times. My best 60ft so far is 1.768. I don't know of any SQ5s that have done a 1.7x.

The other day I was logging data on a back road pull, and one of the items I logged with my VCDS was engine torque. I had readings over 700nm. That converts to over 515 ft-lbs of torque.

What VBOX do you have? If you're feeling really nice, link to it?

It's accurate with .5%. That means my 3.83 reading is within 3.75-3.91.

New update: Tony at EPL made me a race file over the last week, and I took it out to the strip last night to do some initial logging. Typically what we do is start with a conservative file, and do iterative file updates to dial it in from there. All five passes last night were in the 11s. My fastest was 11.895 @ 114.07, including a 3.79 0-60.

I'm interested now. Do you still need new HPFP for 100/104 tunes? I know fueling is an issue.

The HPFP kit is only needed for the stage 2 or higher E85 tunes.
