Just got a used one from a member here cause my hpfp threads were stripped but the inside of it has tiny cracks.

Does anyone know if that's normal?

You can take what I say with a grain of salt b/c I sold it to you but its just casting marks (the fun issues of cast parts).

When I took mine off a while ago it looked very similar.

They are casting marks. Every cover I've seen has them.

don't throw the one that is stripped out away . This things are worth big dollars. Put helicoils in it and put it on the shelf as a spare or sell it.

Took off the old housing only to find out that one of the 7 bolt threads is messed up.

Bought new bolts from audi, hope it closes properly without needing helicoil. WTH is up with these threads on this engine. Never in my life am I using a used bolt again. The new bolts also come with some kind of locking material already on the bolts.

My last helicoil attempt on the hpfp thread was not a good experience. Stupid tool broke while doing it.

Have a machine shop do it.

yeah I have had similar experience . I have been putting steel bolts into aluminum castings for years . On this Audi many have stripped out easily. I just wrote if off to PO over torqueing, but now I am thinking its cheap bolts with no sacrificial coasting ( Porsche uses yellow zinc bolts" those pop off easily after 40 years. )

I have a helicoil to put in my timing cover too next time its off. the one that holds the ground bracket stripped out . I got lucky as I took the washer off and put blue lock tight on it . I snugged it and backed away very slowly from the car " phew "

Got the new housing and hpfp on with stud kit. The stripped out bolt on the housing held up pretty well. Hopefully no leaks in the new few days cause I really don't want to open it up again.

Atleast I can replace the tensioner in less than 3 hours now since I got so good at it.

Now need to find tool to remove 1 of the 3 screws on the hard coolant pipe. There is no way to remove hpfp from the stud kit without moving the hard coolant pipe.

Yeah I new there was some limitation with the stud kit. If it's a tipple square issue just replace the bolt

Yup need a tool for that one bolt and the coolant pipe should move leaving enough room for the hpfp to come straight out the stud kit.
