What type of oil does everyone run?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been reading up on some threads about using different oils for our cars and figured a central location would be a good idea for reference.

    Post up with the following:
    - Year and mileage
    - type of driving (commuter, spirited, track)
    - tuning (stock, stage 1, stage 2, stage 2+, stage 3)
    - have you experienced excessive oil consumption?
    - what type of oil you use
    - oil change interval

    - 2010 - 65k miles
    - spirited
    - stage 2
    - yes, approx 1 quart every 2,000 miles
    - mobil 1 0w40
    - 5k miles

    - 2013 - 38k
    - Commuter with spurts of WOT
    - Stage 2
    - Maybe a 1/2 liter every 4k miles
    - Only oil change I've done I used Mobil 1 0W40
    - No sure yet. Bought the car with 32k miles, changed it at 34k miles. Went Stage 2.

I'm not sure what OCI's I should be using. I'm not going to just blindly go 5k miles by some old school rule, but I'm also not sure if factory OCI's are fine.

Its funny to me that everyone still defaults to the 5K habit, because we always say 5K kms, you say 5K miles...where did this old wives tale come from?

I think it depends on the oil and car. Synthetic oil is getting really good now days so you could go longer.

It's not the first time I've heard that using Mobil 1 might cause an increase in consumption.

I remember reading in a thread about someone switching to liqui Moly oil and having the oil consumption reduced in half. they were using mobile 1 before. its more expensive though and might be cheaper to just top off with mobile 1.

This shit doesn't make any sense. How do you change your oil every 5-6k and then say it needs a quart every 12-15k? Not possible... you reset the amount of oil at every oil change. Wtf?

If running synthetic, why are you guys changing your oil at 3-5K miles? Is it more of a timing thing (don't put many miles on and car only hit's that mileage once a year) or just way overly anal about oil changes? Seems like a waste of time and money...

I think he's saying during that 12-15k mileage he tops off about quart, on top of the oil changes.

I would say most are just being overly anal, myself included. I see it as cheap maintenance and extra protection for an engine that's making +5o% more power than when it left the factory.

True, oil is cheaper than a new motor. However, guys that actually send their oil in for analysis have shown changing it that early (under 5K miles daily driven) is a waste. If doing it just for peace of mind, have at it. If your motor grenades, it's very unlikely it's because you waited 5K miles to change your oil.

I will concede this: Oil $ < Peace of mind $$$$$$$$ (priceless).

Why would he need to? The oil level is always reset to full every 6k when he does his changes. At 12k, it's reset again and at 18k it's done again by another oil change. Makes no sense to track topping off at milage increments that overlap oil change intervals because it doesn't indicate anything. That's why it doesn't make any sense. Engine needing oil would be at increments between oil changes. Do you understand what I'm saying.

    -2015, currently 13,500 miles
-Mix of commuter and spirited driving. My avg is like 19mpg, if that helps, with probably 60% highway
    -Stock
-I did an oil change at 11,250 miles (put in 7qt). Put in another quart 1,000 miles later when it complained. It just complained again.
    -Mobil-1 0w-40, I believe it was
    -Change every 6,000mi

I'm not happy with my oil consumption...I'm going to have to figure something out. I got my Audi change at 4,000 and I had zero problems until I did my own. I did the extraction method and I've been changing my own oil for 15 years, so there's very little chance I did something wrong.

i wonder if the people saying that there is 0 oil burned is really accurate. I never got a need more oil indication from the MMI. i refill the empty oil bottles with the old oil when im done and thats how i was able to tell there was 1.25 qt missing. If i had dumped the old oil into a big container like i used to do, i wouldnt have known that there was 1.25 qt missing from the old oil.
