C7 car battery life/ replacement options?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi, my C7 A6 is over 4 years old now... What is the battery life for the original factory battery? The car is fine, just thinking of being proactive. Can I just drop a new battery from any auto parts store or Costco? Any reset in the VCDS? Afraid to ask how much the dealer will charge a new battery replacement

There's something that needs to be reset so the car knows it's a new battery.
My son's 2012 B8 S4 OEM battery was over $400. It does have 4 year free replacement.
I'm not expecting my C7 to be any cheaper.

C7 car battery life/ replacement options?

You can use have your battery checked to see how it's life is. This way you will know how much longer it will last. You can use one from the auto parts stores but Costco does not carry ones for your car yet. The new warranty on the OEM batteries is now 4 years but I'm pretty sure to be warranty swapped it needs to be tested in the car. I don't like that because you can not just by one, install it yourself and bring it back in if it fails. Having to be in the car means you will still end up paying almost $300 for them to warranty swap your battery because of labor cost so that's dumb.
You battery in your car now should be a standard battery so when you do end up needing one, get a AGM version of it instead. They hold up longer and are more stable. Audi service or parts can help you with that if you have them do it. If not, just ask the parts store for it. They usually offer both versions. If you do it yourself you just need a VCDS to add the new battery information and clear codes.

    Available at Autozone, example: http://www.autozone.com/batteries-st...?checkfit=true

Using a Vagcom, one can view the state of the battery. Also when replacing the battery, change the serial number using the Vagcom so the the system knows it is a new battery. Some have purchased a new battery from Audi dealer for $200.

The are a lot of threads covering battery replacement on the b8 S4 forum: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...1#post11090923

Thanks for all the updates... I have to bring the car in for the emission recall and service next month. I guess I will get a quote from the SA. I do have VCDS if I decided to go with DIY.

I just changed my battery on my 2012 A6 Quattro 3.0T. The dealer wanted $430 for battery and labor. I bought the battery from local Auto Parts store for around $180 and did it myself. I did put in the new battery serial number using VAG-COM. The replacement battery was an exact fit, easy to replace. All the specs were the same, with the exception of CCA. CCA on the new one is 950 amps as opposed to 850 on the OEM.

The part number and specs for the replacement battery are:
AutoCraft Gold Battery, Group Size 95R, 950 CCA
    Part No. 95R/H9

    Amp Hours: 110 hr
    Battery Type: Lead Acid
    BCI Group Size: 95
    Cold Cranking Amps: 950 amps
    Deep Cycle/Starting: Starting
    Height: 7 1/2 in
    Length: 15 9/16 in
    Maintenance Free: Yes
    Terminal Type: Top Terminal
    Voltage: 12 v
    Weight: 64 lbs
    Width: 6 15/16 in

I replaced my battery few mounts ago it was dead. I just bought a battery from local store, which didn't have any coding label and i just replaced it by myself. It was easy job and didn't have issues.
It didn't ask me to do coding. It just worked fine. Btw i have 2012 a6. So my battery was dead after 4 years.

I know this is an old thread, but it helped me find a battery. Just an FYI Carquest (part of advanced autoparts) sells a Diehard gold for $169 (Part # 95R/H9) and they are 10% off. This was a 110Ah battery made in Germany almost identical to the factory battery with a BEM code. Look up the programming steps on youtube, it's very helpful it took me a couple tries to get the programming right.

It will work with no coding, but it’s not ideal. You take a risk of problems down the road. I’d think if you match Ah from old to new you may be ok, but I’m not really sure the computer does a lot of extra charging on the battery when coasting and other times I think for better mpgs.

Is it okay to replace the OEM battery with a non-AGM battery? The AGM version of this battery is about $50 more. Trying to decide if it's worth it?

My OEM 2012 battery was wet (not AGM) and it was 8 years OLD!!! I think AGM's don't last as long. Definitely OK to not buy AGM. Even Napa auto doesn't warranty them as long. Maybe they are just more finnicky or others have had different experiences.

I do agree the technology is better, but starting to think for daily driven cars they are not better. But for things like powersports they are superior (hi vibration).

My 13 A7 comes with the Auto-start/stop feature(always leave it off) so I'm pretty sure it comes with an AGM battery.

Hmm... interesting. Pull out your spare tire, I think they say AGM on the top.

Also when I was looking half of the batteries didn’t have an Ah rating, which you need to program.
