First A4

Well, after looking high and low all across Ontario I finally found an A4. Just down the road from my house.

Elderly lady owned this 2010 A4 Avant and traded it in for a brand new 300S (I wouldnt consider that a step up by any means). I ended up getting the car for 15k out the door with 122k on it.





I don't have any plans for the car except to maintain it, tint the windows, and put a nice set of wheels and tires on it.

The local shop told me these A4s had a timing chain. What is the service life of the timing chains?

Timing is an issue on the b8. Supposedly "lifetime" but evidence in the forum would suggest otherwise. Search in the b8 section for timing chain tensioner and you will see what I mean. Issues tend to arise around 85k miles, but there is some cases much earlier and others much later/never.

No expert here by any means....chain is supposed to be 'lifetime' but that really depends on the timing chain tensioner - which unfortunately has been failing more often it seems lately. Might be one of the first things you do considering the mileage.

In any case welcome to the club! I would also considering swapping out those halogens - BiXenons really transform the car IMO.

I've been looking into getting a pair of BiXenon units but my dealer around here was looking for $750/ea. Lol

nevermind my last post, i didnt realize its canadian dollar. I agree with the above post, the timing chain might need to be replace.

Services to do immediately if there are no records of it being done:

-Call dealer with VIN #, get service history.
-Timing chain + Tensioner/ guides...just get it all done at once.
-Carbon clean! Do not overlook this.
-Double check water pump for leaks.
-Flush fluids of Trans, Diffs, Brakes, PS fluid ect...

Doing this ASAP will get this car rolling happy for many miles to come!

^^^this, but make sure the service history shows that the pistons and rings were replaced relating to the oil consumption issues on '09s, '10s and 11s.

Search ebay for a used set of Xenon headlights as well as the classifieds here, some people sell theirs after upgrading to E-codes.

As far as oil consumption goes, I wouldn't be too concerned about whether or not you car had any warranty work done as a result of that. The class action law-suit ended a couple months ago and even if it was still in effect, they only warrantied oil consumption until 75k miles. As this point it is what it is, hopefully your car is fine. Enjoy your Avant!
