Question Rear brake pad shims? (3.0, 255mm rotor)

Quick, possibly dumb question - should I swap the rear brake pad shims onto the new pads? I have looked around and in some pictures, the pads have shims and in others they don't. I am replacing some anonymous aftermarket pads I didn't install with Pagid ones. The new pads have adhesive backing on them - is that to hold onto the shims? They didn't come with any shims of their own.

If the new pads didnt come with shims, don't worry about it. Throw the pads on and be done with it.

Do you mean the anti rattle clips? (between pad and carrier, thin stainless things), or some kind of pad-backing shim?

I'd use the anti rattle clips.

Those are on the front. The rears dont have them.

Thank you. Do you happen to know what the adhesive-feeling stuff on the back of the new pads is for? Or is it anti-squeal stuff?

My guess is that its there to replace the need for a product such as CRC Brake Quite. Should help keep the pads tight to the calipers and prevent them from bouncing around.

The new pads definitely have the spring clips. I was asking about a pad-backing shim - a thin sheet of metal that sits between the back of the pad and the caliper - which these don't have.

Well I already installed them coated with brake grease like normal. I'll run them as-is and see if I have any noise issues....

Some sets come with them, some don't. Not sure if OE ones did or not (there's like 8 PNs, most are EOLd, current doesn't look like it does).

Oh those clips. Stock, there's the wire clip on the fronts only. The rears have those spring ears on the pads themselves to accomplish the same thing (from what I understand). I have seen the aftermarket clips for rears too - not sure why they are necessary though. Thanks for the info

I have 255mm rotors on the rear of my 3.0 and my pads don't have any metal shim between them where they meet the caliper. Mine do have those bunny ear things to hold them in place when you push them in, but if I understood correctly those aren't what you're talking about. I was told by the dealership to cover the backing area with a light amount of brake grease to prevent squeaking, which I did, and I've had no issues for months now. Hope that helps!

Just to update anyone who happens across this thread in the future. I didn't use shims on the rears and everything is working properly without any weird noises.

I had to replace the rear pads and rotor a few weeks ago and did the same thing. No shims, and it works perfectly. No need to buy kits with the shims for the rear.

My Hawk pads didn't come with shims, and there weren't shims on whatever pads were on my car before that when I changed them out.
