    2013 S6 oil consumption.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello all.

I bought my 2013 S6 a few months back and have put in 3 quarts of oil already without hitting 5K miles. I didn't do the oil change but trust that the dealer did the right steps and put in the correct amount (could be wrong here). I believe they used Mobil 1 full synthetic, but can't confirm that either.

3 quarts in between oil changes seems very excessive. Not seeing oil leaks or smelling burning oil. All other indicators are normal according to onboard systems. I drive fairly conservative and often stop and go traffic. Is this normal or should I be worried?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Yes this is abnormal.
What made you decide to add oil? Low MMI reading? Warning saying oil level is too low? or something else?
I would go back to the dealership.

Thanks for the note. Yes, the oil indicator prompts me to add more oil every few weeks.

Has to be a leak. Take off the belly pan and I bet you will find some oil. My guess is someone put to much oil in it and blew the main seal.

3 quarts in 5k miles is excessive. However it is not out of the ordinary for these cars to need a quart after 5-7k miles. There is a little blurb in the owners manual about oil consumption.

Fellow 2013 S6 owner here - this is definitely abnormal - I have not needed to add oil before changes.

Thanks all. I am getting a pre-track check tomorrow so I will have them take a look at belly pan.

One thing that started recently is a rough idle when stopped at traffic lights. Shift to N and it goes away. I saw a thread where folks had similar issues. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...traffic-lights

Not sure if they are related.

Could be a vacuum leak causing rough idle.

Oil issue may be related to PCV?

Definitely not right. Could be the PCV valve, like wwhan said, as it will cause rough idle and excessive oil consumption. Some also notice a whistle at idle, when the PCV valve is faulty.

So, PCV valve is just fine and no oil leaks at all. They found that 3 of the 8 cylinders are miss firing! The shop thinks they are bad spark plugs.
It does seem odd to have bad plugs with <45K miles. Sucks, was supposed to track it for the first time tomorrow.

Plugs can be fouled with oil, from bad rings & cylinder walls or valve guides.

Maybe consider running a leakdown test on the cylinders or a compression test.

Plugs get changed at 35k I believe. If they were changed, fouling after just 10k miles would be mighty peculiar.

Fingers crossed it is only plugs! This would be a nightmare.

I hope so too, but plugs don't explain the oil usage.

So, i got the spark plugs changed out. No fault codes are showing from the on-board system. The idling seems to have gotten better but still a little rough. Going to run it for a few days and see how the oil consumption and idling go.
    Fingers crossed!

A few folks mentioned that Audi recommend swap at 35K. I can see why:

It would be good if someone could post pics of their 35k plug change on a car with no issues for comparison.
Yours may be indicating symptoms of other problems and not just normal 35k or even 45k mile wear.

If you are referring to the odd look of the side electrode that is normal for this type of plug, but the ashy buildup is what looks odd to me. However if he is truly burning oil that might be what we are seeing in his pic.

Here is a pic of a brand new plug to see the odd looking side electrode.

    The never ending saga continues....

A week ago the EPC light and check engine light go off and I have major power/acceleration loss in the car. Worried about more damage i get it towed to my shop. They mentioned that the ODB was still reading mis-firing even after the spark plugs are swapped. I change all the ignition coils as recommended. During the test drive, they notice the car was still "sputtering. Replacing the diverter valve in the car now. They did say that there was oil leaking from the diverter valve, which may be the root cause for the oil consumption.

    OMG...this is getting expensive!

I have a tune and other mods that void the warranty.
At least my local dealership is claiming that the warranty is voided.

Car seems to be running well but there is still a strange knock at 50% throttle.
My shop wants to flash back to stock and test. I think that may be the best option.
I can always flash GIAC tune after the logging.

They'd know if it had been mapped anyway even if you flashed back to stock. With engine issues like that they always send the data back to Germany.
