Where are you guys getting replacement pistons for 17z calipers?? I just picked up some calipers From the junkyard and noticed a couple nicked pistons after removing the pads and cleaning them off. Hoping someone knows a decent source for these.

Paid a little less than $200 for both. Thanks, I'll try and contact him and see if he can get me some.

I am just going to replace all 12... Calipers have like 190k on them and most of the pistons look pretty beat.

    All 12?

Be prepared to spend a pretty good chunk of change. That's 12x pistons, 12x seals, 12x dust boots.

The process also isn't very fun at all. Getting all of the pistons out. Then getting them back in without damaging the boots.

Hmm that's not too bad, then I was hoping they wouldn't overcharge you like a lot of people on this site try to do. Reason I asked is you can buy refurbished ones off parts geek for $300 plus shipping and they are fully cleaned up with new seals, dust boots, and Pistons. Only thing missing is the crossover pipes which are an extra $50. Just wondering what you'll pay in the end to spruce yours up vs buying refurbished. Seals are pretty cheap, but not sure how much pistons cost.

i take that back, i guess 17z seals are more expensive than the 18z ones. This site has a pretty good selection of stuff (http://audibbkparts.bigcartel.com), but you might be able to find the seals cheaper elsewhere as it would be $100 for both calipers. god knows what the pistons cost. you might think about just cleaning up the rough spots very carefully with a file. at this point though, you might be better off trying to return them or sell them and just buy the refurbed ones on partsgeek.com.

edit: just looked at the first link i provided up above and it appears that they no longer have nearly as much products related to the 17z/18z brakes as they used to. Also, looking at their prices it seems they jacked them up a little bit.

Anyone ever try the phenolic pistons? I'm sure the heat transfer to brake fluid is a lot less, I'm just worried about longevity... I can get a complete rebuild kit with phenolic spacers to service both calipers for like $150.

Yeah, but why only one side and not all 6 phenolic or just 6 aluminum? Anyone know the engineering behind this? I would be replacing all 6 with phenolic pistons.

Btw here's the link to the kit I'm talking about:
