I have a 2009 A5 3.2 bought new in Sept 09 and still with the original battery. I have no signs of the battery going bad but want to know from the rest of you how long has your battery lasted?

No clue exactly how long, but my battery is technically 4 years old (Vehicle manufactured in 2012), has spent its entire life in a cold climate, and still not currently showing any signs of failure. Living in a cold climate reduces battery life because of starting in cold weather.

A lot of the battery's life is dependent on treatment. A battery that has spent its life in cold weather, has been exposed to high draws (i.e. custom stereo), and has had to be jumped will have a life that is years less than one with an easier life so to speak.

I'm currently at 57k with no signs of weakening power.

I've replaced 3 batteries since Day 1, but it has nothing to do with the battery life or quality of the battery itself.

I've got the remote start w/ GPS module and it would drain the battery very fast when you leave the car in the garage for couple of weeks.

But I'm glad the dealership covers everything under the warranty

Wish they would sell Varta batteries in the US. Closest you can find is Interstate since Varta doesn't ship car batteries to the US. Stay away from DieHard or NAPA batteries

PS I do not work for Interstate :0)

DieHard batteries were hit-or-miss for me, but I never felt like I got any benefit from the additional cost they seem to come with. Interstate has always been great for me, and the pricing is reasonable. I just wish they weren't so damn ugly! At least with the S5 the batteries are in the trunk, so it doesn't matter how ugly the battery is.

When I test drove for Audi/VW since Varta doesn't ship to the US, they use Interstate which is why I use them and they've been great. Not the longevity of a Varta (yes,, I do live in "cold" climates) but the best I've found. As to hiding them, the Touareg batteries (in V6 and V8) are under the driver's seat :) . The monster V10 has two batteries, one in the trunk and one under the seat.

Doesn't all OEM batteries are made by Varta?

The S5 isn't special in regard to it's battery. It will die out just like any other car. Run the battery until it shows signs of getting weak or needing a charge. For what it's worth I've changed the battery on my own A8, A8 W12 and a colleagues S8 all without putting it on a trickle charger. Simply buying a replacement battery from Advance Auto Parts, disconnecting the old and throwing in the new battery. No problems whatsoever. I did use VCDS ( Vagcom) to reprogram the new battery but that is all.

Yes, I was mentioning when you need to replace it, Varta does not sell car batteries in the US

I think our cars use the AGM battery which is supposed to last longer than traditional flooded batteries. So if you don't running the battery down all the time and don't keep it in the hot sun, it should last much longer. It also helps that the battery is in the trunk and not in the hot engine compartment. It's also why it's so much more expensive.

Best tip I've found for a long battery life (flooded/AGM) is to keep it topped off. I have a smart charger that I connect to charge the car once a month. It's also a good time to check under the hood for any other things that need attention.
