Engine cranking, have fuel. Not firing at all.
Is there an easy, non vagcom way to check if maybe the crank sensor (engine speed sensor) is bad?

My occasionally is doing the same thing, but I have not had any codes pop up. It'll start A-OK in the morning, say, and when I try to go home, I have to crank it over forever for it to go. It's been less since I changed plugs, and coil packs are on the to-do list.

If you still have ICMs, possible they went bad?

ICM eliminated (dog bone adapter) and FSI conversion.

Regarding your 'occasional': IIRC (maybe 1.8T not 2.7T) the ECU can use the cam sensor if crank sensor is no good. That requires longer cranking (only one signal per revolution from cam sensor).

I'm talking going a while for cranking. Not like "oh, 2 seconds longer". I mean, I can keep cranking on it, off an on, for a while without it starting up. Then when it finally does, RPMs shoot up to about 1500 for a bit before settling down.

Sure sounds like your engine speed sensor (crank) is on its way out.

Would that not throw a code?

Usually not. However, you can check for signal. Log into VCDS, measuring block, one of the first ones will have RPM readout, start cranking car and it should give a read out. If it stays zero, then there you go.

Thanks. Wouldn't surprise me with number of other things on this car I've had to replace.
