Project Winter Beater

Picked up a pretty clean ebony black 01 1.8tqm for $300 Canadian pesos over the weekend with engine damage. Abit of rust and no sunroof.

Plan is to get it running so I can park my clean modified a4 for the winter. Thinking of swapping my engine+trans out of my good car as I know it's reliable.















Rented a uhaul to go pick it up. My brother Inlaw towed for me cause I have yet to get a hitch for my 3/4 truck.





Got the engine torn apart to find timing was off about 6-10teeth.

The cylinder head has chunks missing so that is beyond repair.





Bits of metal I took out of cyl one with a magnet.



But the cylinder walls are fine so I can use the block to build my 2.0t that I am planning.



As it currently sits. Not sure what to do right now. Thinking about taking my aeb engine apart that needs rings and putting that head on this 06a block.

Been a while since an update cause not much has happened.

Poped my aeb head onto the damaged block to see how it was doing and the non damaged cylinders have lower compression then the damaged one so pulled the engine+trans out to build my 2.0t out of the block. Trans looks leaky too that will reseal it and throw it back into the beater and save my lower mileage trans for the 2.0t.











And it's all out.



Had to bend the alternator bolt to get the alternator bolt off as the clutch fan bolt was stripped.



Removed the steering wheel cause it's mint and put it into the eh four.





So I guess I am going to reseal the beater trans and swap in my good engine out of the eh four.

I have old awm rods with original pistons still together, along with unused rod bearings laying around. Swap out that one cylinder by simply dropping pan (and undoing rod from crank), pop out assembly, and drop replacement in. I suggest you don't trust the rings on units I have, but you can use them at your own risk. They should be fine still and quick 3-5 second hone will make them work fine. Let me know!

Unrelated to this car, but I noticed in your sig you have an eBay short shifter in your "Eh Four". How do you like it? Is there any slop in the shifter, or does it feel pretty solid?

Going to start tearing apart the eh four tomorrow. Thinking about swapping in a v8 since it is alot cheaper. about 1/5 the price of a 2.0T build.

V8 swap would be pretty sweet, but probably wouldn't be as fast if speed is what you're after. It definitely wouldn't be slow though, and it would sound amazing.

Yes the EH FOURs 1.8, trans, front axles, headlights(for now), k04 and exhaust are going onto this car. May save the stern engine mounts for the v8, get some s4 ones or something for this. gonna install my subwoofers and bt headunit aswell.

scratched the beaters rear bumper opening the garage door. hopefully it buffs out. such a noob move.

Got the beater stripped down ready for its new 1.8t. Probably gonna leave all the oil on the subframe cause rust prevention. Lol. That or spray some rust paint on the rusty bits.

Got the EH FOUR pulled in and bumper off.

I got the engine out on the 13th and I fucking hate turbo studs/exhaust nuts. I have had nothing but problems with them. Gonna double but the cat to turbo this time around. Not dealing with those stupid fucking locking nuts.



The nut snapped the stud on removal and then I had to drill the fucking stud out.





Retapped the turbo stud holes and got the new studs in. I hope the remaining threads hold.



Got the cars shifted around ready to drop the engine into the beater. One of the front wheel bearings are bad though so have to drop the top control arms to drill out the pinch bolt.

Engine is in and ready to start.



Pulled the driver knuckle cause the bearing has play. Had to drop the whole front corner to remove the pinch bolt with an air hammer. Completely destroyed the abs sensor trying to remove it. Gonna order a new sensor off eBay and a wheel bearing tool aswell.




Still have to remove the case. Spent the night thinking of how to get it out and I have an idea.

It's all together and I have been driving it the last two days. Swapped in the front knuckles off the Eh Four. Also swapped in a partial facelift single din console. Have abunch more things to button up.

Both front wheel bearings ended up being bad so swapping them over was the best option. It also needs a rear wheelbearing and a rear caliper(for park brake) and it will get that stuff when i park it for summer, after I swap it off from the eh four.

Yep the 4.2 a6 came with aluminum uprights and s4 hp2 calipers so gonna strip it of the good stuff before I scrap it.

Depends on if Steel or Aluminum. If steel, it will bolt right up with HP2 brakes. If aluminum, you need the proper straight front lower control arm

Got a bunch of parts for 50% off today from pnp. All four rotors, recently replaced two reman looking front calipers and a reman looking rear passenger, A recently replaced fuel pump, both front windows, Tinted darker then what's on there right now, panel for either the eh four or beater. What ever one is better goes in the eh four. Two headlights for the beater with all broken tabs. Should be able to make them work and only $30 for the pair is perfect for the beater. Someone was taking the pads as I went back to my car for the tools. :( still have to go back for the passenger seat cushion.

Did you swap this to the EH 4? Does it rattle like a pos rusty bucket with the Stern mounts? I just put on a Dieselgeek skid plate with 034 mounts and it's driving me fucking insane.

My EH FOUR came with a THOR skidplate, and it Never rattled or made a noise with all the upgraded mounts. It is not making a sound on the beater either with the same mounts.

Made a heatshield. Was hoping to make it so it protects the vcg but the manifold runs right into where the oil line used to bolt up at. Gonna try a go at a v2 to protect the vcg one of these days. Also have a new vcg on order. Seems every 20k kms like clockwork it needs one. Gonna paint the cover this time around too.
