APR TCU Tune: Any Issues with Car Rolling Back on Inclines?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Specifically, has anyone with the APR TCU tune noticed their car rolling back on an incline (like a manual) after releasing the brake, before the transmission/engine engages and the car begins moving forward?

Seems I may be the only one experiencing this. I'm going to ping APR to see if they've heard of this, but I'm contemplating returning the TCU tune for a refund until I get it resolved. BTW, I love the tune - would hate to lose it. Here's the issue: when stopped on an incline (let's say moderate), upon releasing the brake the car rolls back noticeably. Like driving a manual noticeably. Obviously, it should not be doing that. Dealership updated the factory TCU software, and as far as I can tell, that seems to have resolved the issue. My fear is that if I return to the APR software, the problem might return. Will advise when I hear back from APR, and of course, they can always just come here and comment on whether or not they've seen/heard of this issue. Perhaps it has nothing to do with software, but the fact that the factory update seems to have resolved it has me thinking it's a software issue.

does it seem like APR has a lot of tune issues? Are issues not occurring with other tuners or is it because APR has more users and as such more posts are made concerning it?

I haven't seen anything related to this issue anywhere, and very little problems (if any) reported on the APR TCU tune for the S6. I also have not had any issues with my APR ECU tune, so from my optic, not a lot of tune issues. There are some, obviously, including the AMAX issue afflicting RS7 owners, but then again, I'm not aware of too many companies offering RS7 TCU tunes either.

I have not noticed this issue on my car. Does this happen in all modes, D/S/M?

Can you provide more details around the context of when this happens?

Even without the TCU tune my car will role backwards, it has a clutch after all. If I put the car in reverse and am on a decline the car will also roll forwards. Stabbing the gas will result in lots of revs with little to no movements. This is the nature of DSGs, they still have a clutch just being controlled by the car.

Please give me the names of those companies offering RS7 TCU tunes. Thanks.

Sorry Heel - I thought that's what you had and was the cause of your subsequent AMAX issues.

Xtek, thanks for chiming in. That's the problem I'm having - I'm not sure whether what I'm experiencing is normal behavior, but my concern stems from the fact that prior to the TCU tune, I don't recall the car rolling back like it has post-tune. Here's an example. I approach a stop sign on a moderate or steep incline. After coming to a complete stop, I release the brake and transition to the gas pedal. While transitioning, the car rolls back significantly. In at least one occasion, light pressure on the gas didn't immediately arrest the roll, which sounds similar to what you describe in your post. I haven't experienced that with the stock tune in my car. Perhaps it's normal and I have nothing to worry about, but it's not consistent in my car if that's the case.

It happens without a tune as well, though not often.

I've noticed it tends to happen when you come to complete stop on an incline, and then quickly release the brake pedal fully and get on the gas. If you release it slower, the clutch engages and prevents the car from rolling back. Kinda freaked me out the first time it happened to me.

SilveR, good to know. I'm going to try and find an incline and test that out today. If it's simply a matter of the clutch needing more time to engage, then that would certainly ease my concern. As stated previously, I'd hate to give up the tune given how much smoother it works with the ECU tune, compared to the factory TCU software.

Same here, stock tcu tune and I occasionally roll back on inclines, but when on reverse it seems like the clutch rides itself all the time. Thought it was normal.

Its easy to think that you didn't notice it before. But that behavior is 100% normal. This happens with all cars with an automated manual (which is what ours is).

You'll tend to notice if under certain conditions...

    1. Reversing
    2. Stopping on a hill without holding the brake for more than a second
    3. Slowing down on a hill and not coming to a complete stop

All normal. Because the car does have clutches try not to let the car creep/roll. Its slipping the clutch when this happens.
