Looking to get back into Audi with a B8 S4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys, I used to have a few audis, 2 2.7s and one B6 S4 4.2.

I have a 335 now. Pushing 500hp at the wheels. I need something a little more practical so automatic awd is in my future.

I always tend to not know about "Should got this one" stuff after I already purchased a car.

I can probably only afford a 2010 or 2011. Is there any differences between those two years? If so, what?

What do you guys recommend to look for? etc. Any help would be awesome

I currently am searching around the forums to find information, though I'd make this thread to get some good insight.

    Thank you

Biggest thing with those model years is the thermostat.

They are known to be faulty and are expensive to replace.

I believe one of the fuel pumps also had some issues but it was not as common.

Few tips, if the car is < 75,000 miles contact Audi of America and provide them the VIN.

They should be able to tell you if the car has Audi Care, Extended Warranty or has been flagged TD1. They may also have a service record which might help you get an idea of how the car was cared for.

Sports Diff, B&O and navigation are all must haves for me. Everything else is nice, but not required.

    Hope that helped.

For the DCT, newer is better. Not sure if you can find out by VIN what version of the mech unit is in there

If you want a DCT, you will have to purchase a BMW. The Audi S tronic is a version of the DSG transmission. Fuel pump problems were a problem on the N54 engine. The 3.0 SC had water pump issues . All will have failed by now and replaced. IMHO, all T stats will eventually fail. Its just as matter of time. No significant differences between a 2010 and a 2011.

I was under the impression the WP and Tstat were both under recall and would be replaced?

OP, look out for the DSG mechatronic unit failure, seems to happen more often on 2010's. It used to require a unit replacement which was something like 3-5k to replace since the mech unit itself is 2k. There is a repair kit out there from ECS for around 200 or 300, cant remebmber exactly. Good luck on the transistion, Im looking to get into a 2011-2012 from my, gulp, 07 335. Get ready to start missing your MHD, S4 tunes are 1k and up. Lol

    Great info here, thank you.

I am definitely interested in the sport diff, is that just an LSD?

It was a must have for me. That, and navigation. B&O would have been a nice to have, but I planned on upgrading the stereo regardless.

How the hell can I tell it has a sport diff? Any websites with a vin decoder?

Call AoA or get on live chat and ask them. (Have the VIN ready)

That or look in the MMI/crawl under the car.

For whatever reason Audi opted to not have an option code for the sports diff.

Theres a few ways, if it has the ADS buttons on the dash is a good one. I usually just ask the rep to look at the rear diff and if theres an electric motor on the passenger side of the rear diff.

No GOOD VIN decoders that I have found yet, but you could call Audi of America with the VIN and Im sure they could tell you the details.

In the words of the Great Orange One...

The OP is perfectly correct to refer to the auto in the B8 S4 as a DCT (dual-clutch transmission). "DSG", "S-tronic", "PDK", "DCT Drivelogic", "TCT", etc. are all DCTs. Enlighten thyself.
