Be Honest, would you go from a B8 A4 to a New GTI?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
The reason i say this, is the new Sport GTI comes with a limited slip diff, golf r brakes, adjustable suspension, and 220hp/248tq, a $550 chip gets you 336hp/404tq on the stock turbo, and since vw is in the sh*tter, msrp is $29k and you can pick them up for $23k all day long. Besides the obvious loss of awd and the "prestige" of owning an Audi, whats the big difference.......

    Thoughts?

The gen3 e888 is definitely a powerhouse.. remember that hp and tq is measured at front wheels only... But yeah I've thought.. it's even a nutter with the r's is 38 turbo..
But the lsd equipped gti's are hard to find at under 33k.. and for a couple of more grand golf R is the way to go...

I've driven GTIs and they don't do anything for me. A tuned A4 is usually faster, has AWD, and VW interiors aren't as nice. I'd go Audi 10 times out of 10.

Where are you seeing $23k? Just did a search in my area and starting at $25k. It could be a fun little car.

    Test drove a 2012 B8 A4 shortly after a 2016 GTI Wolfsburg.

    Went with the A4.

Honestly liked the interior a lot more. It feels like it has a lot more space, which, for whatever reason, makes the ride more enjoyable to me. -1 for the red interior everything, though. It was a day day when I finally found out how to dim those suckers. Quattro makes a huge difference for me for bad weather type situations, and with logging almost 200 miles a day for my commute, the less stressful it can be the better. Quieter, smoother ride as well.

The GTI had nice bells and whistles. CarPlay, sport suspension, the gearbox on the MT felt a little smoother to me. Interior felt cramped, though. Not great for long rides in my opinion. And with the gas mileage I'm getting (up to 36mpg some days...with a fuel leak I just found out about no less) that area is pretty much a draw.

It really goes back to quattro, though. I can drive in ways I never dared too with all the front wheel drive cars I've had in the past. My Accord Coupe would have the advantage over my A4 in a straight line, but it would have become a spec in my rearview as soon as any serious maneuvering was required.

Haha I did the same thing. I wanted a big body sedan. So the b8 was my favorite.

    Here's my old MK6

I have always loved GTI's, especially the mk4 so I was very very tempted to buy a mk6 when I was shopping for a new car. At the end of the day, I went with my B8 because of the AWD and the interior like everyone is saying. If I had the funds, I would definitely buy a mk7 GTI to be my little project car in conjunction with my B8.

if you want to to golf, get an r. don't give up your awd and prestige. the only thing id sell mine for, is the rs3 sedan, which I couldn't afford. tho I am tempted to look at the b9 a4 manual awd when it comes out, tho I prob couldn't afford that either.

Owned 3 different VW Golf's over the years. Quite fond of the VR6 but not the size. Was great to have a compact car for parking in the city though.

Couldn't go back to that small, but love the look of the newer MK7s

Or uh, you could save the money, and just tune your A4. So you'll have that increased horsepower, AND AWD.

I base that decision on age. I am 34. Can't fit customers in the back very well. I feel like im too old for a gti. I agree tho if you do get the Golf R instead.

Cars already tuned revo stage 3, even with a $2-3000k Ko4 it won't touch a tuned stock turbo gti, really don't care about AWD, I have a b7 avant if it's crappy out.

    Thanks for the thoughts guys

i have a b8 a4 stage 2 tune, and my mother in law recent bought a 16 gti

id say the gti felt a bit more sporty, firm, and nimble( my b8 is at 115K miles already so I'm sure bushings ect are worn pretty well) , and i did like the dsg.

but there was a pretty obviously lack of traction compared to the Quattro, even with the gti at stock power levels
i took it around a couple corners which i could rail around in the audi, and was smoking the tire in the gti when accelerating out of it....
I don't believe she has the sport with front lsd tho.

so if i had the choice between both cars i would keep the audi.
now if it was a golf R that might be a different story, but i have yet to test drive a car wit the haldex system.

It sounds like you're going to go with the gti either way.

What are the specs of what you're talking about? What I'm seeing, stage 2 is quoting above 350+ hp. A tune on a gti will absolutely not be faster. You're forgetting the added traction needed for this kind of shit for a faster 0-60.

If you want a new car, and it sounds like you do, then just buy it.

    B8 A4 - K04 348hp 342tq 93 octane
    MK7 GTI - Stage 2 336hp 404tq 93 octane

if this is all your are comparing, then the a4 has more hp but the gti has more torque. that doesn't mean it faster or handles better. the torque will peak much higher in the gti than the a4, but it will also fall much faster. the k04 kit was designed much better to carry all hp and tq across the rpms. APR shows gti 0-60 5.6secs 1/4 mile 13.18 -- APR doesn't show but from most peoples experience a4 0-60 4.8 secs 1/4 mile 12.6. Just because a car has more hp or torque, doesn't mean its faster. the b8 a4 stage 2 has 354 tq, so 12 more than the k04, but just like the gti, it falls off much sooner than the k04. also the b8 a4 will come out with a stage 3 kit soon. rumors are around 380hp/tq at the wheels. so well over 400 crank. probably 450ish. even the gti is38 turbo kit has 386hp/403tq. its all about what you really want and the money you want to spend. I just don't see losing money on your car to get a gti, you could just spend a few more thousand on your car to make it faster....
what do you really want tho?

Sorry guys, typo, im Revo stage 2, stage 3 is the k04 file. Appreciate all the responses, i drove one and thought it was super fun, different feel, absolutely more nimble, just seeing if anyone else made a similar change and missed anything about their A4.

As for the APR stage 3 kit, yeah i dont know about spending $6000 on an A4, its not worth it, trade in + $6K = something better than an A4. Plus who knows when or if that will be released.

True, but after owning both, I'd much rather have the b8. The golf was an amazing car though, and I'd do anything to have it back.

they don't say how they measured it. I doubt it was stock with those gains. also your trade plus 6K, if youre talking gti , would not be faster than the b8 stage 3. again even the is38 with supporting mods was not as fast as a k04 b8 a4. awd isn't just for handling, but launching. once a fwd car reaches a certain hp, the tires just spin. hell look into a used audi s3 for that money. and tune that.

I'm helping a coworker buy a 2017 GTI Autobahn with the manual transmission. 2017 because it comes standard with additional option the 2016 didn't have. As for as i know, the autobahn comes with the larger brakes, additional hp and limited slip.

Speaking of VW. What the hell happened to the GLI. During my MK4 days the GLI was the shit. Recaro seats, sound system, BBS............. Now its just crap.

Can you link the one you saw for 23k? I may take a looksie

I secretly love mk7 gti's... every time I see them I want one... Heck for 24k.. that's bang for the buck...
But if I did go vw route the R would be the car.. it just stinks we didn't get the dual injection motors here like I originally thought ... One reason I didn't go the s3 route.. I'm liking my e85 option with 400lbs tq too much... And possibly cleaner intake valves....

I dont know what happend to the GLI, its sad, anyway as requested, the car im looking at is the 2017 GTI Sport, manual, comes with a limited slip diff, golf r brakes, adjustable suspension, xenon headlights, and 220hp/248tq.

I don't know why va prices are lower, all places local to us have 16 performance Pak gti's for 32 to 35.. that 17 sport with new "nogaro" wheels is a new model... Sure it now comes with performance package standard?... They sure look like the larger R brakes!...

    For me, no.
I've had an A3 and Q3 loaner which are bigger than the GTI, I couldn't do it, way too small. GTI's are quick little things but I'd like to have room in a vehicle.

These cars looks so good in black. Always been a fan of the GTI's. It's also a hatchback so you get more practicality out of it.

Stage for stage they have been up through MKVI, although I think you're right that the MKVII may break that trend.
