Can crankshaft bolt be turned easily?

Is it possible to reach the crankshaft pulley bolt from the bottom of the vehicle, or does it require moving parts to get access? Don't need to remove any bolts. My vehicle is a repair shop and they want to charge 2-3 hours labor to see if the engine will manually turn over freely. It's 45 minutes away, so I can't check it out myself.

There's not a single crankshaft bolt holding the pulley on. It's 8 smaller bolts, one is slightly offset.

I've wondered about a good way to turn the motor over manually myself in case anyone else has suggestions.

The only parts that would have to be removed to access the pulley for something like this is the belly pan. Like was said, there are 8 bolts on the girl. Not sure if some kind of strap wrench would provide enough grip to turn her over manually, but I would imagine it could be done. Not sure what this 2-3 hours of labor there is. To put the car in service mode takes ~20 minutes from on the ground and using jack stands, less with a lift. I've timed it. Any more than and hour and they're charging you for them to learn imho.

You're very helpful, thank you for that. So you can get a wrench on one of the 8 crank bolts from under the car? I'm assuming putting the engine in service position involves turning the engine manually to a certain position?

I wouldn't turn the motor with one of the 8 crank bolts. You'll likely seriously over-torque or snap it.

Service position is bumper off and the radiator pulled forward allowing more clearance at the front of the engine.

Don't use the bolts, you will snap them. Instead, take the supercharger belt off and use an all plastic strap wrench around the pulley and turn it that way. No sure how much resistance the accessory belt will add, but I could feel the engine turn over a little with no belts on, so YMMV, but this is your best bet. A belt wrench will allow for the supercharger belt to be removed without service position since it's the easiest one to deal with. Below is a pic of a strap wrench in case you don't know what I'm talking about.

BTW, I said all plastic strap wrench because you don't want to turn the risk of fucking up the crank pulley itself, which will happen with any other type of strap wrench. Just warning you.

Turning a motor over with the plugs in can take a lot of force since you're working against the compression of the engine. Remove the plugs and it should spin with much less resistance.

Have you used this tool personally? Can it be used without putting the vehicle in the service position? I just called the shop and they are ordering a tool to turn the crank after they put the vehicle in the service position and found there was no center crank bolt to turn. I'm assuming the tool is similar to the one you show above.
If they can turn the crank with this tool, I'm expecting an adjustment to the labor costs since they put it in the service position when they didn't need to.

This is a good idea, thanks!

No experience personally. I don't have an S4, but I would guess that a service position is likely still required; this is just the tool to turn the crank. The service position may not be required, but I am not sure how much clearance there is to complete the turn with the engine in it's normal position.
