Question Another shifter alignment thread? Need some guidance with seating it

Hello. While driving on the highway "spiritedly", my top row of gears just disappeared, in a way. Basically, I can barely put the car in to reverse, first, third and fifth. Gear just pops right out as if it is not going further up and be locked in to place.

My 2nd, 4th and 6th are just fine. Clutch engages and dis engages just fine. So.. I do not think I busted my transmission, but rather somehow the alignment bracket got moved? I tried loosening the bolt on left and the one above and just cannot get it aligned. Do you guys do it in neutral or put it in a gear or what are the tips and tricks here? I must have seen different videos and numerous articles, but cannot get it perfect.

Little histroy - I have had the car for about four years now and did not buy a short shifter, but had clutch change within a month of getting it. However, if I am not wrong, this looks like it was changed before and might be a jhm maybe? It has given me no problems until this event and is my daily driver.

Feel free to correct me on my assumptions here.

No more shady mechanic bills and excuses - oil top off before an oil change is normal or dealing with outdated forums that have image size limitations. And no more dealing with vendors that do not provide horsepower numbers but sell you random things by labeling them as performance parts. No more dealing with the Audi dealership and having to buy custom Audi specific tools. Wow. I can't believe I lived through all of this. Money pit.

I bet one of the shifter linkage bolts/nuts has come loose. Happened to me after a shop that did some transmission work didn't use threadlocker.

Craps. It has been a while since I have been under, but where is that specifically?

There's a JHM video that shows the transmission out of the car and how the linkages work, but I can't find it. It really helped me visualized the location of each bolt/nut in the linkage system. You can get your fingers on them without lowering the trans, but I think youll need to lower the trans to get tools in there.

I'll keep looking for the video.

Perfect. Thank you! I took another stab at it from the cabin after work yesterday and no luck. I then saw your link and understand this now. I have done clutch/turbo swaps in two of my B5 S4s in the past so if this is the same then I have a good idea already.

    Time to get under..

I lost all gears except 3rd and 4th when the cross rod linkage popped off. Third was sometimes possible but popped out. Had to drive the car home in fourth gear mostly.
